Description jelabarre 2004-10-13 18:40:36 UTC
In the 2.0 (1.9mXX) builds, there has been a gradient added to the toolbars in
the GUI for all components (writer, calc, etc). It makes the interface look
clunky and unprofessional. As it is probably a matter of personal preference,
there should be an option to disable it in the interface and go back to using
the method used in the 1.1 series for matching the system colours.

This has been present prior to the 1.9m56 builds, but I did not see how to
select multiple versions under "Found in version", and also has the same problem
in Windows 2000 (I could only select one OS in the "OS" box).

reassigned to cj

mci->cj: Hi cj, is this something we should implement?

Hi Bettina,
From my point of view there is no need to introduce the "Win 95" look again,
because it looks too dated. In general we are getting positive feedback on the
new design. As this is an RFE please decide what to doo with this. Thanks.

Persobally I find the gradient look very ugly, and unsympathetic to the look of
the underlying system. It also looks shamefully close to the look Microsoft
office 2003. Please give at least the option of using something that looks a bit
more original and sympathetic to the standards.

In some of the earlier proposal documents for the toolbars, they are shown
looking much the same as the current ones, but with a consistently coloured
background. This looks so much better than what we have at the moment, so it
would be nice to have this as at least an option.

"Skinning" should be the job of the window-manager - not all users have the same
color-scheme set as you.

For example, i'm running Windows 2000 SP4 and have a dark color-scheme set for
my desktop (dark background colors, bright foreground colors) and the toolbar
gradient does look really ugly with my color-scheme.

Please reconsider respect for user-preference or at least make this an option.

duplicate.
Fortunately, it was just a temporary effect (OOo now uses the system's theme)

closing duplicate.
Comment 7 ed2 2004-12-30 20:57:23 UTC
This is not really a duplicate, since the other issue refers only to the GNOME
environment, and this one refers to all environments.

Alos, this effect is not temporary, since OOo only uses the system theme IN SOME
ENVIRONMENTS. The gradient effect is still present in Windows (XP Classic or pre
XP versions), KDE, IceWM and many other environments, and therefore STILL NEEDS
A DISABLE OPTION in these environments.

For clarification/reference on the Window manager subject. The "ugly"
toolbar-background gradient appears in IceWM and WindowMaker, but not on KDE and
Gnome (refer to issue 40800 ).

It seems on KDE one may "override" the gradient effect by using a given theme
such as Keramik.
