There is no user interface when the program opens.  It shows up in the task 
bar, but when I click File, New, and either of the 4 programs, it doesn't open.  
It just says please wait and then that disappear and I'm left with nothing 
again.  It still show in the task bar though.  I didn't know if there was some 
issue with the installation, but it said everything was installed fine.

Added oooqa,needmoreinfo keywords.

You specified the platform as Mac OS X, but your description sounds like you a Windows user - Mac OS 
X does not have a "task bar".

Regardless, OpenOffice.org 1.0.3 is NOT the latest version for either Mac OS X or Windows.

Please provide more information on your problem and hardware/system software configuration, or try a 
later version of OpenOffice.org.

Please read the requirements of OOo 1.1.x and use the latest and greatest
release of OOo for Mac OS X - which is the 1.1.3.

e.g. Mac OS X 10.2.x is minimum!
