In the attached PowerPoint file, there is a table with two drawing objects
containing text (slide #7). Those objects incorrectly overlap, while hiding the
text in the buttom object.

Shosh,

Two notes:
1) 
When I view the file in Power Point 2000, the objects overlap just as they do in
OpenOffice m62 on Windows. There doesn't seem to be a problem there. 

2)
However, the footer text appears in the slide in Impress, even though it's set
to not appear. It Power Point it doesn't appear.

This looks exactly the same under powerpoint.
Setting to works for me.
