Description thorsten.ziehm 2004-11-22 12:56:54 UTC
- open a writer document and insert a table
- when the cursor is in the table open the table menu (main menu)
=> you can find the item 'Hide Gridlines'
- open the context menu
=> you can find the item 'Table Limits'

The problem is, that both items show the same status for the convers situation.
=> when 'Hide Gridlines' is activated, then 'Table Limits' are activated too

My proposal is, that both have the same naming.
If you think, we have to have both namings, then the functionality of 'Table
Limits' (in context menu) has to be changed correctly.

If you have the final naming or a final decision, please send the task to OS.

Liz->CJ: Can you tell me which term better fits the functionality? Or do we have
to change the functionality?
Comment 2 christian.jansen 2004-11-24 12:32:35 UTC
CJ -> EM. We should align this to "Hide Gridlines"
The following areas have to be changed:

- context menu
- Tools / Options / StarOffice / Appearance/ "Table Boundaries"

Please inform the doku about the alignment

In progress: compare Table - "Gitternetzlinien ausblenden" (Hide Gridlines),
then open context menu of a table and see "Tabellenbegrenzung" (Table Limits).
Both of these can be turned on and off via check mark in front of them. (The
main menu item is the new one: check usage of "gridlines" anywhere else in product)
Comment 4 e.matthis 2005-01-17 19:54:14 UTC
"Gridlines" has not been used in SO/OOo before, whereas table boundaries and
table limits were used, but were possibly synonyms for the same functionality.
Therefore I agree that there is a problem either way.

Terminology Issues to consider:
We also have "grid" as in "snap to grid" which has nothing to do with the table
boundaries. So adding another use of "Grid" in combination with "gridlines" is
perhaps confusing for users and difficult for l10n.

Regarding the definition of Gridlines, I think of lines on grid paper (aka math
paper).
e.g. MS Office uses gridlines inconsistently: View -Gridlines shows "grid paper"
lines, which is different than the actual table boundaries seen under Table -
Hide Gridlines.

Conclusion:
I do not think we should use "gridlines". The question remains between "Table
limits" and "table boundaries", in which case, I choose "table boundaries"
because it corresponds to "text boundaries" and "Object boundaries" which we
also have and cannot be misunderstood ("limits" on the other hand is a noun as
well as a verb and therefore possibly a problem in l10n).

Liz->OS: Please make the corrections as follows...careful German and English
changes are different!

context menu of table:
EN_us
Table Limits --> Table Boundaries
German remains as is!

Table menu:
EN_us
Hide Gridlines --> Table Boundaries
German
Gitternetzlinien ausblenden --> Tabellenumrandungen

Under Tools - Option - OOo/SO - Appearance
German only
Tabellenumrandungen --> Tabellenbegrenzungen

The text no longer has the verb "Hide" which is then also consistent to OOo/SO
style, see View menu with many similar entries with check marks.
Comment 5 e.matthis 2005-01-17 19:56:12 UTC
Liz->OS: sorry, I made an error in German (it is late at night): please use
these strings:

context menu of table:
EN_us
Table Limits --> Table Boundaries
German remains as is!

Table menu:
EN_us
Hide Gridlines --> Table Boundaries
German
Gitternetzlinien ausblenden --> Tabellenbegrenzungen

Under Tools - Option - OOo/SO - Appearance
German only
Tabellenumrandungen --> Tabellenbegrenzungen

If it's not fixed in time for OOo2.0, it should be fixed for Ooo2.0.1.
Comment 8 thorsten.ziehm 2005-02-11 10:08:41 UTC
Translation tasks cannot be fixed so easy in a product update. Therefor it
should be fixed in the timeframe before OOo 2.0 final. I retarget the task back
to OOo 2.0.

German string in context menu should also be "Tabellenbegrenzungen"
