Description ahung 2004-12-24 21:30:32 UTC
OpenOffice failed to search for double-quote (“) or any other search text that
includes a double quote. I suspect that the search didn't sanitise the input
from the user and hence this bug. The other possibility is that
AutoCorrect/AutoFormat automatically replaces double quotes, after which it no
longer recognises it. The double-quote replacement option is on by default.

reassigned to SBA.
Comment 2 jbleijenbergh 2004-12-31 00:13:00 UTC
The search and replace functionality indeed seems to differentiate between
the types of quotes: †“ "

The first two are automagically created by autocorrect (tools->auto
correct->custom quotes->double quotes-> replace). However by default
find/replace will only look for standard quotes it entered as such("). Turning
similarity search on helps a bit but seems to broad. (catches als single quotes,
comma's etc.)

These quote types are quite confusing, maybe find and replace shouldn't
differrentie between quotes by default, behaviour that can be turned off.
Comment 3 ahung 2004-12-31 21:59:11 UTC
I agree with your suggestion to search for all double-quotes: †“ " .
Similarity search is too broad for search and replace operations.

This happns even in OpenOffice versions of 1.9.65 and 1.1.3 Beta. Using Windows
XP and Linux(NLD).

original summary "Search for double-quote (???) failed"

This is not a bug -> changing to enhancement and reassigning.

If you want to find the typographic quote, either select it prior to launching
the dialog or copy and paste it into the search box or use the
insert-special-character from the search-field.

To search for all the quotes at a time use regular expression search.

This has to be optional since when I search for "A" I dont want "B" as a result
Comment 6 ahung 2005-01-25 22:07:39 UTC
I agree finding exact quotes is the techically correct thing to do but it may
not be as user-friendly because users may not aware that autocorrect/autoformat
replaced the quotes for them but not in the "find and replace" dialog. Even
with regular expression search, it is inconvenient to insert all three double-
quotes from insert->"special character". With the third option, which is
selecting it prior to launching the dialog is counter-intuitive because the
search text may not be on the screen. If the user need to type in the search
text with the quotes, select it and then launch the search screen in order to
have the quotes type up properly, then it is an extra step that users need to
take to search for text with quotes. In conclusion, I agreed with an option in
the search dialog to find typographic quotes as well as ".

Behavior still exists, as described, in v2.4. Still a PITA. And what to do
about it is still a very good question. /tj
