Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 4040
Convert text to columns
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:14:13 UTC
An option to convert text to columns in a range of cells (as in importing type "Text CSV", but applied over limited range) would be most helpful. This is then the reverse of MERGE, combine values into first cell of range.

Hi Falko, I was just trying to do this to. Excel has a "text to columns" menu click, which invokes the text import wizard for the highlighted column. This is often a needed when pasting in text (tabular numbers) from another application. Another consideration is that Gnumeric invokes the text import wizard when ever you paste in text (it could be just a "paste as" option: "paste text throught import wizard" or something). Ideally, both methods would be avaible.

Yes this is the feature which is really missing. I work with statistival data very much and i shoul either everytime 1. copy data 2. go to notepad 3. save it 4. go to data import 5. find the saved file 6. import it which is too long. The "text to columns" feature from Excel would serve this much more better. Thanks Jakub

Niklas: We already discussed this issue and IIRIR there is alreay an issue on this feature request. If so please mark this as double if not be go back to me for more specific information.
I don't have another issue for this. The only related one I know is issue 15509 for text from the clipboard.
The main functionality of this issue is covered by #15509 *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 15509 ***

How come this has been closed as a duplicate when all the other duplicates are closed pointing to this? I use this feature in Excel every day, and its is the one thing holdnig me back from ditching Office completely.
Have a look at Issue 15509
Reopened issue because it is not sure that the q-pcd from issue 15509 really covers this request
reassigned to UE. Please have a look at issue 15509 (Q-PCD for enhanced clipboard). Maybe there is a chance to combine this.

While this should be an integrated feature, I think is good to point to this macro to help in the meanwhile. http://www.ooomacros.org/user.php#104183 This is how I got it to work in OpenOffice.org 1.9.77 (this is my first time importing macros, perhaps somebody else could help to refine this installation instructions). Download it, uncompress it, add is as a package (I added the tree packages Addon*.xc*) in tools/package manager. Then tools/macros/organize macros/Organize Dialogs... From there in library/append and select script.xlb Then tools/macros/organize macros/OpenOffice.org Basic... From there My macros/text to columns/main button assign an you can assign the macro to a keyboard shortcut or add a “Text to Columns...” option in the tools menu (or in any other). Regards,

For rimugu : Although your installation procedure might work, is really complicated! :-) The macro is currently deployed as UNO package Although UNO packages are merely zip files, you don't need to unzip them before installation! Open The package manager and add the (zipped) UNO package in a single step After this you will find a new menu entry under the "Tools" menu and another under the "Help" menu The first is for running the TextToColumns macro, and the second is for seeing a nice "About..." dialog :-)
I join this issue, an excel-like interface to import of CSV data.

to keep openoffice msoffice compatible, "text to column" should be included. I have several clients who output reports to the clipboard and then paste into spreadsheet column 1 - then "text to column" allows creation of a spreadsheet version of the database report. Is this going to happen..?? has it already happened..?? I thought the main thing is to first make a compatible product then second make it a better product. I remember the lotus v. excel wars. Thanks
Why is it assigned to "requirements"? It looks like requirements are clear. Is it because no developer has taken this issue? I bet some of those that have provided solutions as add ons (like the one from Paolo Mantovani) would not have a problem giving the code for inclusion on OO.org Or am I wrong in this Paolo? Or are there really more requirements that the example solution don't cover? If we have the solution already the inclusion should be easy for a current OO.org developer that stops it? So, is it really a lack of requirement or the lack of a developer that takes this issue that
I agree, the requirements are clear. As of v2.2, text pasted into Calc from an unknown source will invoke the Text Import dialog box which provides this functionality. All that needs to be added is a menu option to do the same to the selected cell range in a spreadsheet. This may also allow for the Text-Import-on-paste dialog to be less "sensitive", e.g. only come-up when pasting multi-line delimited data and not more limited normal text (See complaints on issue 15509)
