Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 40484
Not all text manipulation features on text toolbar
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:33:17 UTC
It is unecessarily complex to add text to a block. Imagine I want a double ended arrow with the word "Excelsior" centred in it. 1. Select the arrow from the block arrows and draw. Easy. 2. Double click and type "Excelsior". Text appears top left text formatting tool bar appears. 3. Click 'centre justified'. Text is now in middle at the top. there is no way to move it down from the tool bar 4. deselect item. Right click and select 'text' from context menu Select anchor point, wrapping, and margins. At last - what we are looking for. But what a faffle, and will everyone find it? I would have thought that there should be some way of accessing these other functions from the text formatting toolbar, so that it was all in one place and easy to find.
Changed to enhancement. Reassigned.
Confirmed. (By the way I found that sometimes the "anchor point function" does not work correctly with new objects. I put that into a separate issue 43030.) Yes these text options are a bit hard to find. One idea might be a "anchor point" palette to be opened and used from the text toolbar. Additionally, it should be made more clear to the user how the alignment options from the current toolbar (left/center/right) and the "anchor point" play together. Do they interfere or not? When to use which? (They do different things!)
I think this one is still valid. Draw, in particular, is clumsy and undeveloped compared to some of the competitors. How about a target milestone, at least?

Ok, subtle difference in 3.2.0 under unix The default text location is no longer upper left, but left & vertically centred. So I might never have noticed the original problem as it would do what I wanted more or less straight away. But the problem is still the same if I actually wan the text to or bottom aligned - you have to deselect, reselect, right click & pick 'text'. So 1/10 for changing the default, but the same problem persists that not all the text manipulation features are on the toolbar. I'm changing the target to Framework, because writer has the same problem.
