Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 40912
Desktop icons not anti-aliased
Last modified: 2006-02-07 23:11:30 UTC
First of all, the new toolbar icons are a great improvement. The desktop icons are nice at full size, but look a bit choppy around right edges unless on a white background. When they are resized for use on toolbar and menu, they aren't very legible.
SBA: The summary "desktop icon issues" is very promising that this is a so-called "collective issue". These do get closed right away. Rule No1: One issue found => ONE issue written. It only works this way. SBA: "...aren't very legible..." is not exact a description for a Prio3 defect. -> Changed to Enhancement". There is no text on the icons. Actually, this description does not at all tell what is desired. Simple nagging ["I don't like XYZ - Change it!"] does not bring us further unless a proposal is combined with it. SBA->CJ: This seems to be about desktop icons that "could be better" in some way(s). Try to find out what the submitter wants ("unchopping" right edges maybe...?). After yoiu found out, feel free to change the summary to something meanungful. Reassigned to CJ.
I hardly think that I was nagging. That being said, an icon doesn't need to have text to be ilegible. My point is that when Icons are reduced in size, thaey are not very distinquishable. Each icon has a symbol on it that helps you know what it is for. These are hard to see. perhaps if the icons were resampled instead or reworked for smaller sizes it might help. Simply shrinking a large icon often doesn't yield the best results. What is clear at larger sizes often isn't a smaller ones. As for the righthand side of the icons, they would look better if the edges were smoothed. The transparent edge is choppy. Perhaps outlining the icon with 1 pixel of gray nay help. I know that this is not a functional problem, however first impressions are very important.
Reported as standalone issues #i41600# and #i42649# some time ago.
CJ->STS: Please have a look at this issue. I agree to timecastles opinion that the application icons are looking a bit choppy around right edges. And it seems that the right edge isn't smooth and anti-aliased. You can see this very well in Startmenu of Windows XP.
Possible duplicate issue 44204
Confirmed, by me (OOo 1.9.79) and iqgryn who opened a duplicate. ;-) Made the summary more specific.
*** Issue 44204 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue. ***
STS -> HRO: It's the .ico-file problem, isn't it? Please take care about. Thanks.
*** Issue 43852 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue. ***
*** Issue 41600 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue. ***
hro@mh: Please coordinate new icons branding for OOo 2.0
mh->hro: please provide a reference to actual location of icons in cvs, this make discussion a little bit more easy.
.
What is the status of this issue?
No info, no status. Why?

I forgot to mention gsl.zip I have uploaded contains the unmodified icons from the tree. If someone has experience in image editing please try to help.
I have checked those icons and I found the root of the problem. The icon files are good, but they do not contain the pictures with 32 bit (8bit transparency) color. For the perfect solution we may need the source of icons (where can we found?) and they have to add to icons in 32 bit formats. If I counted well 27 icons are affected and need to be revised.
The icons and high color png images are located here: http://go-ooo.org/lxr/ source/gsl/sysui/desktop/icons/ Maybe it is possible to convert the png images to ico and keep anti-aliasing intact?
Yes, we can! What I only need is the png files from http://go-ooo.org/lxr/source/gsl/sysui/desktop/icons/hicolor/ How can I collect it easily, or can someone collect and put here to me?
There are not hicolor png files for the next icon files: ooo-chart-doc.ico ooo-configuration.ico ooo-empty-doc.ico ooo-empty-tem.ico ooo-image-doc.ico ooo-macro-doc.ico ooo-main-app.ico ooo-open.ico Where can I find hicolor png files for these files?
Is ooo-image-doc.ico is same as ooo-draw-doc.ico? Is it bug or something else?
Now I am ready with available icons. Please check it, and write your opinion. I think it is good for us.
Created attachment 29880 [details] ooo2-icons-rev2-part1 -- OpenOffice.org v2 icons - revised - available icons
pjanik: Can you tell me where can find hicolor (16,32,48) png files for these icons: ooo-chart-doc.ico, ooo-configuration.ico, ooo-empty-doc.ico, ooo-empty-tem.ico, ooo-image-doc.ico, ooo-macro-doc.ico, ooo-main-app.ico, ooo-open.ico Thanks!
StarOffice guys: There are two icons with same anti-aliasing issue: so8-chart-doc.ico and so8-image-doc.ico. So they miss highcolor (32bit) version in the icon file.
The icons you have uploaded do look better. There are some slightly different icons here: http://go-ooo.org/lxr/source/gsl/sysui/desktop/icons/hicolor/128x128/mimetypes/ What is the opinion on using those instead for the document icons? I would also like to bring to attention issue 41602
I checked those icons, and they are really a bit different. They look good in 128, but not so muct difference in 48. They also miss the listed icons before this post. I created the somehow improved version of 8 bit color icons. If you want, you may integrate it into icon files that in the already attached ooo2-icons-rev2-part1.zip file. (I provide a zip pack with 32/8, 48/8 in gif, ico and png.)

Created attachment 29985 [details] OOo Icons - Rev 3 - Part 1
Hi OOo fans! I have integrated the corrected 8 bit icons (32 and 48 px size) into my update. The current state is: READY - All icons are including true color picture in size 48, 32 and 16 except those eight. - All icons are including 8 bit color picture in size 48, 32 and 16 except those eight and icons' name ending with -doc and -tem. - All icons are including 4 bit color picture in size 48, 32 and 16 (I have never touched they)... To continue my work I would you ask for the required 8 icons. Please download the current file and give me your opinion about the current situation... Thanks, KAMI
Created attachment 29987 [details] OOo Icons - Rev 4 - Part 1
Quick UPDATE! I had a time to finish everything what I can. So all icons have corrected except the eights. Please check the current state...
sorry, but I think it is 2.0.1 issue.
Why do you think that? I have been working hard in the last days to deliver this update. The main part of corrections have been ready since Friday. In my opinion the finished icons appear in 95% on UI. The left icons may appear in 5%. This is an artwork (patch) not a program patch, so integrating the main part of work is much better than do nothing and wait for the full solution. Please test these icons and make the right decision. I would ask for this roadmap: 2.0 - include this issue in the current state 2.0.1 - Please provide me the required icons and I will finish this issue. (or open an another for that 8 icons)
kami_: I really appreciate your great work, but the problem is we also have to change the documentation, all screenshots etc.
If you checked my modifications you would have seen the modifications not affected the shape and color of icons. They're only recover the bad anti- aliasing of 8bit pics and add 32 bit pics to icons. So you shouln't reshoot the screenshots and/or recreate the documents. You may see the difference on non white background. White edges are gone, icons look more solid.
pavel: can you build a test build to test new icons and they side effects?
@pavel: Can you please track this issue as I'm absent for the next two weeks. Thx.
>------- Additional comments from pjanik Sun Oct 2 13:19:58 -0700 2005 ------- > >...but the problem is we also have to >change the documentation, all screenshots etc. Can you be more specific on what needs to be done for documentation and screen captures.
Can you set a started? We're almost ready :o)
kami_: so - I'm ready to create dev build of this based on m137 (once it is ready).
hmm, kami_: can you summarize what has to be changed?
You have to extract ooo2-icons-rev4-part1.zip file to "<OOoscr>\sysui\desktop" directory. You must overwrite the old files. Remember: 8 icons have not got highres (or any) png version in CVS, so I didn't finish those.
*** Issue 44105 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue. ***
OK, it will be in my Build-1 of SRC680_m138. The directory is sysui/desktop/icons, BTW ;-)
Yes, U are right... Sorry for the wrong information :o)
Please try it and report results... ftp://ftp.linux.cz/pub/localization/OpenOffice.org/devel/680/SRC680_m138/Build-1/
I have tested and It is OK. You can try it if you set the background of the windows to black (or another dark color )... Can someone test it? But I think it is a good solution... Remember: 8 icons have not got highres (or any) png version in CVS, so I didn't finish those. There are not hicolor png files for the next icon files: ooo-chart-doc.ico ooo-configuration.ico ooo-empty-doc.ico ooo-empty-tem.ico ooo-image-doc.ico ooo-macro-doc.ico ooo-main-app.ico ooo-open.ico Where can I find hicolor png files for these files? Can you add thw creator of icons to this issue as CC?
Question: Is ooo-image-doc.ico same to Draw's document icon?
I was not able to make it into 2.0.1. kami: so: what else has to be done?
It is a sad news :o( As I wrote in my last post: " There are not hicolor png files for the next icon files: ooo-chart-doc.ico ooo-configuration.ico ooo-empty-doc.ico ooo-empty-tem.ico ooo-image-doc.ico ooo-macro-doc.ico ooo-main-app.ico ooo-open.ico Where can I find hicolor png files for these files? Can you add thw creator of icons to this issue as CC? " But the all of otherpart (attached in ooo2-icons-rev4-part1.zip file) is good and tested...
Happy new year! :o) I have got the full iconset so I can post here. Please check and deliver into 2.0.2... Thanks, KAMI

Hi kami_ I've seen the new icons and the mime types logo are different from the app logo (I mean for logo the visual identity such the three lines in writer, the 4 squares in calc...) I do prefer the old ones (revision 4), but well, it's just my opinion. Also, some of them have completely changed, such as macro (it whas a circle, it's now a gear) and two icons seem not to be antialised: ooo-main-app.ico ooo-open.ico The ooo-main-app.ico curves are very different from the old ones. Well, hope I've been usefull. Thanks for your contrib, kami_
Hi kami_ > I've seen the new icons and the mime types logo are different from the app logo > (I mean for logo the visual identity such the three lines in writer, the 4 > squares in calc...) As far as I saw the differences based on the size of icons... I do prefer the old ones (revision 4), but well, it's just my opinion. The icons come from other contributor. All off icons has new look and feel, but I havent enough time to merge all of them. I just added the missin pieces. > Also, > some of them have completely changed, such as macro (it whas a circle, it's n ow > a gear) and two icons seem not to be antialised: > ooo-main-app.ico > ooo-open.ico I will check that two icon... The ooo-main-app.ico curves are very different from the old ones. Well, hope I've been usefull. Thanks for your contrib, kami_ Thanks, KAMI
Hi! Here is the fully updated icons - based on the new design (it is in the source of M150)
Created attachment 33234 [details] New line - icons - 1
Icons are in winicon01 now. Looking for QA person...
of: The icons have been reviewed by someone who can tell the difference. They are ok. They also look good on a desktop and therefore this issue is verified for me.

Tested with Dev680m155, on WinXP SP2. Using black background colour. Very nice work, but still some issues with icons for 'quickstart.exe' (left hand side of attached screenshot), compared to 'soffice.exe' (right side)- quite jagged in comparison. Also the 16x16 icon for both applications seems lower in quality than other icons: quickstart.ico has some lighter colour towards bottom of right edge, and soffice.ico seems quite jagged (no alpha?) Regards, Andrew

ace_dent: Thanks. Can you please file new issue so we can easily follow the status? Assign it to kami who will fix it and then will reassign to me for commit. Closing this issue because it is in m155.
Follow-up report raised in Issue 61757. regards, Andrew
