Description stefan.baltzer 2005-03-16 11:00:05 UTC
SBA->LIZ: As discussed: According to DUDEN (THE "Bible" for German spelling and
grammar", but AFAIK _not exactly_ for "International Software UI" yet... :-),
the "&" is reserved for use "in company names only" (Like "Smith & Wesson").
Therefore strings like "Search & Replace" (in menu, in dialog title) should read
"Search and Replace" instead.
Note that this is only one example. In order to adress this thoroughly, a UI
string database search sounds feasible.

The idea is to remove all ampersands from the UI strings in English and German
as ampersands are not standard for UI text. However, sometimes they are used due
to lack of string space, so each case has to be weighed in priority and
practicality.
Accepting for office later.

liz->sba: I have told the designers that no new strings should be created with
ampersands. The old strings will be cleaned up as we go, like all other style
changes. We can start here with the most prominent example "Find and Replace",
but I will not make this issue into a mutiple-issue to encompass all cases,
because they are spread out over different apps and priorities.

liz->os: please change as follows (then pass on to the sd and sc dev if
necessary so they can do theirs)

Find & Replace --->Find and Replace
Suchen & Ersetzen ---> Suchen und Ersetzen

(please keep mnemonics and "..." where already existing. Thx, I know you'll do
it right.)

ccing mmp so he'll see that we have started the cleanup of ampersands on the UI
by changing this menu/dialog title;
ccing ufi so he knows this needs to change in the Help.
