Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 45457
Make it possible to embed fonts when saving presentations
Last modified: 2014-04-24 18:13:41 UTC
It often happens that I make a presentation and then I need to show it on some other computer. The problem is that the computer where I show presentations doesn't have fonts that I use in my presentations. Those computers also frequently don't give you root/administrator rights so you can't install the fonts you need. This is why there is a need to have an option to embed fonts into presentation file when saving it. So that all the fonts are contained in the file and OOo can use them directly and the presentation looks as I need it. I think that the best place to put this option is into Save File dialog. It should be a checkbox that should be disabled by default.
Reassigned.

I would also like to see more support for embeding fonts into OpenOffice.org documents. At least into text documents and presentations. This is often needed if you move documents to another computer and also need high fidelity for fonts.
Note that font embedding is critical in some cases, such as scientific texts that use special fonts for mathematical symbols. These documents become unreadable (or worse yet, misleading) when default fonts are substituted, so it's pretty much impossible to share such documents in the OpenOffice formats, or to take them with you on the road without carrying a preconfigured laptop. Just last week I sent an associate some presentation in .ODP format, and ended up doing a lot of explaining about some mangled formulas. Some PowerPoint add-ins, such as TexPoint, make copious use of such special fonts, and embed them into the PPT file. It's critical to preserve these embedded fonts when importing to Impress.
Of course, there is the issue of who owns the fonts. I'd imagined that Ooo would only embed fonts it supplied, 'cos I don't think there is any verifyable way to identifiy what is licenced.

closing duplicate. To just show the presentation on another computer, you can export to PDF or flash and show the PDF and/or flash instead...
Export to PDF or flash loses a lot of functionality, such as animations.
Yeah it is not realy a good option. With PDF you loose a lot of information and with Flash well it becomes too much complicated and a lot of systems don't even have Flash player. For example 64-bit systems for which Macromedia still has not released any player or plugin. So embeding fonts is by far the most simple and reliable thing.
This would be a VERY helpful feature. I really need this since I create documents , spreadsheets, and presentations with specialized fonts that I cannot use on other people's computers. Also, If possible, could you integrate this feature into Base & Math, in addition to the rest of the Open Office.org suite. Otherwise, you developers are doing a great job. I love the product.
Submitted issue is from 2005. We were wondering if this issue has been taken into consideration as new feature in OO (Impress)? Would be great!!
Very much needed! I use to send files with specialized fonts to users who would not be able to see things as I wanted to.
