Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 45501
Inconsistent behaviour applying frame style to an image
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:26:07 UTC
Applying a frame style to an image shows inconsistent behaviour. To reproduce: Strange behaviour A) - Create new writer document - Change the frame style "Graphics" to postion the image e.g. on the right page border. Note the predefined sizes... - Insert an image (e.g. bigapple.gif from the gallery) - Apply the "Graphics" style to the image by double-clicking on the style in the stylist. Result: The image gets repositioned, but not resized. Now: - Apply another(!) frame style. - Apply the "Graphics" frame style again. Result: The image both times gets repositioned AND resized. Why not so in the first place? See also issue 45499 for a related but not equal issue from me. Tested on OOo1.9.84+WinXP_SP2.
Initially a graphic already has the frame style "Graphics" applied to. It is inserted with its original size (size information in style is ignored intentionally). So if you now try re-apply "Graphics" style nothing happens, because it is already applied. MRU->OS: IMO Writer should be a bit more intuitive here; maybe an exception when an already applied frame style will be applied, that the size of the selected frame is adapted to the style's settings.

That's exactly what I observed and what I consider being "inconsistent" Initially when a graphic is inserted the size information is ignored. But when applying that same style again after having applied another style - then the size information is used and the image gets rescaled. From a user's perspective this is irritating. My suggestion is that: a) The size is always ignored Or my preferred, since more flexible, solution: b) Each framestyle allows to explicitely have one of four options: 1. size is ignored (e.g. applying the frame style to any object does not affect its size) 2. width gets set and height is calculated from aspect ratio or (in case of a text box) changes with the contents 3. height gets set and width is calculated from aspect ratio or contents 4. Both width and height are set explicitely All four of these make sense in certain situations. In case b) the frame style "Graphics" could have #1 as predefined behaviour, which is obviously intended with the current solution to ignore the size attributes when inserting images.
