Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 46027
manipulating table border through toolbar icons is not intuitive at all
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:38:26 UTC
The table border icons in toolbar seems to work in additive way, which is not intutive at all. For instance, when I click 'north and south' border icon, I expect west and east borders to be removed. But it does not work in that way. Clicking icon _only adds_ the border(s) shown in the icon. However, 'no border' icon works as expected - it removes all borders. So, the easiest way to work with icons is to remove all borders first before adding necessary ones. I wonder if this behavior is intented. If not, then I hope this gets fixed soon. Steps to reproduce 1. open new writer document. 2. add table. 3. locate caret inside cell. 4. click 'north and south' border icon in table toolbar. 5. confirm that there is no change. 6. click 'no border' icon. 7. click 'north and south' border icon again. 8. confirm that the cell only has north and south borders.
What do you call 'north and south' icons?
Hi es, Sorry for confusion. :-) A 'button' might be better term than 'icon' here. In OO.o 2.0 beta, you will see 'table toolbar' when you place caret inside table cell. And when you click 'borders' button (4th button in top line), you will see borders toolbar which shows 8 buttons. I meant 'north and south' as 3rd button in bottm line.

Created attachment 36811 [details] a screenshot to compare table border icons between OO.o 2.0 and MS Word 2007 Beta
I wonder if 'needmoreinfo' keyword prevents this issue from being processed. Please have a look at the attached screenshot. The table border icons in MS Word are funtionally grouped and reflect border states well, which results more intuitive user experience. If the screenshot is well enough to explain this issue, please remove 'needmoreinfo' keyword and consider this issue in planning the requirements.
Removed keyword.
Trying in 3.0m10 (pre-beta) I find that it is a little different. It behaves as follows: - the tob border of a cell belongs, to the row above (unless in the top-row) - the right border of a cell belongs to the column right (apart from the last column) Also each cell has it's own border properties. Once set in a cell, it might influence setting borders in adjacient cells. (see issue 83111)
