Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 46055
text hidden from document - appears when inserting and deleting paragraph mark
Last modified: 2022-11-29 22:29:27 UTC
Hi, A combined Hebrew and English text document will split and format paragraphs incorrectly. You have the document and the pdf with blank half page. Regards, Florin.

Please attach the original Word document (this is a Word import). Else we cannot know how the empty sections should look like.
Correct, this is a WORD import, but I do not have the word original. I had no problems wit OO 1.1.4, so why to keep it... I have attached a modified Israeli document. Please go to chapter C and follow the instruction line. The correctly formatted paragraph will show up. Save, close, oped, the same problem, the same procedure to see.

Hi, Open the document "Hebrew formatting no template 1.odt". Go to section 6, two columns, LTR, split across two pages. Save, close, open. All OK. Go to section 6, two columns, LTR, split across two pages. Format columns for RTL. Save, close, open. Go to section 6 and see the wrong page format. Now, go to section 5 after E, press enter, all looks OK. Change back section 6 LTR, save, close, open. All OK. This document was created fresh, two times with the same bug.
original summary: "hebrew page format" I can confirm the defect with m123 on linux -> OS to ALL I don't think it has something to do with the hebrew-text. 0) Open the attached file "Hebrew formatting 1.odt". -> the text is missing in "C". 1) Insert a paragraphbreak at the indicated position -> the text appears from "nowhere". 2) Delete the paragraphbreak again (press backspace) -> the text remains "Tools|Update All" doesn't work to make the text appear. I think it is quite similar to issue 52621 and issue 26410
SBA->FME: Please proceed.

This bug over 2 years old. It was supposed to be fixed in 2.1 as far as I recall. Ver 2.2 is still not fixed. Any comment? Regards, Florin
Hi, This is 3 years old. In April 2007 I left a message not answered yet. 2.4 in 2008 still buggy... Can I get some answer? Anybody home? Florin.
fme->florin: Setting this to P1 is definitely *not* the right way to catch attention. Yes, this is a bug. And yes, this is three years old. And yes, this should be fixed. Nobody doubts this. If you like to raise the visibility of this issue, you could either collect votes for it or (better) submit a patch which fixes this bug. Anyway, I'll set the target to OOo 3.x.
Today is UTC July 14, 2016 (!) This bug is still unfixed in OO 4.1.2 In Hebrew using sections with 2 columns the first page or two disappear in some sections randomly. The missing text sometimes appears to me to be beneath visible text. Usually when I add a line or two before the section with the missing text it reappears and then I can delete the added line.
I am still working on that project (near the end) and this bug is extremely annoying. Every time I want to put out a draft, I have to check all the problematic pages to see that they are showing properly. Please fix.
I am using the latest version of OO and it is still a problem. Last I checked it was a problem in Libre Office as well. The same thing.
Hi, With due respect, after 12 years this bug is not solved. What am I to understand? Really. I am puzzled. Hebrew users are a small community and voting is not a real option. Wouldn't be a good way to fix bugs based on broader criteria for selection. I am no programmer, so I cannot help with a patch, as suggested by Frank Meies. Thank you, Florin.

Hello I think that you should vote anyway. Who knows? That is why I started the comments: to show that it is still a problem and that there are people who care about it. I find that if I add a line above the problematic area, the text reappears.

Hi, I know about it, but this is no comfort and it should not be one. 12 years is long enough for anything. Or is it something else... I voted. Thank you for the advice. I missed it somehow. Best, Florin.
Still a problem and still terribly annoying. If someone could post some kind of workaround, it would be enormously appreciated.
I want to report the "interesting" results of the following experiment. Note that when I want to export all or part of the file (it is a total of 493 pages) to PDF, before it exports to PDF it repaginates the entire file. After this repagination, text often disappears at the beginning of chapters. I just highlighted the problematic page, which is a header near the top and 2 columns of text below it. After the repagination, when the text disappeared, the highlight, instead of extending in 2 columns below the header, the right column highlight now appears to start just below the header and to extend UPWARD. One line of text is partially visible at the bottom of this right column. The right column highlight extends upwards and on to the previous page but no text is visible. The left column continues on upwards after the end of the right column on the previous page. No text is visible besides the text that is properly on the previous page. Note that in Hebrew the right column is the first column.
This is a really interesting Issue, and for sure not easy to resolve, I guess. I have not checked the Code... So I think the Issue is as soon as sections are used in a more complex way OpenOffice seems to just break on the complexity. The Document Hebrew formating no template 1.odt is much more complex then needed to break OpenOffice. Just do the following: 1. In a new Document, write some text. 2. Then Create a section 3. and some subsection. 4. Now enter somewhere a break Columns. Result: And Hush text disappears. I categorize this one as Section and break statement break the document. Next Action Point: Which code is responsible for sections? Which Code is responsible for break lines and Columns?

Thank you for your interest. Are you asking me to do "the following" and let you know what happend or are you just explaining what the problem is? I think the latter. Note that this does not happen everywhere throughout my 493 page document, but only in some places. Sometimes after I add a blank line the problem is fixed. Sometimes it is not. Thank you again for your interest. If there is anything I can do, please let me know.
(In reply to mplaut from comment #26) No you do not need to do anything. I had issues categorize the Issue and noted this one down. But it is still very unclear. It needs a lot more research.
This issue was fixed in Libre Office as of version 7.4.1
