Description rr 2005-03-29 11:39:56 UTC
When marking an area, it would be a great enhancement if the area size was
displayed while extending/reducing the selection area. Because if not, it is a
bit difficult to select a equal sized area in the destination sheet in a paste
operation.
Where the display now shows B24:C24 if you mark two cells horizontally, it would
be much nicer if it said B24:C24 (1L:2C) in the same situation. Or it could show
"Selected 1 Line(s) 2 Column(s)" in the status bar.
I think I have seen something like this in Excel.
Not so important in the example above, but very useful if one marks area bigger
than the screen display.

If any questions, I will get it fast if it is sent to roald.ribe@farmand.no

Hmm. The problem with this suggestion is multiple ranges.
If you mark one area, hold the Ctrl key pressed and mark another range somewhere
else on the sheet, what should OOo display then? The total number of cells?

Anyway, why do you need equal sized ranges for pasting? I just click on the top
left corner of the target are and select "Paste".

Yes, but this mode of operation is not very exact. If some of the target cells
that will be affected by the paste op, some kind of algorithm seems to
automatically skip the cells which already contains data, and just continue with
the next one. There should at least be an option for the user to overwrite the
old cell values in this case?

I think it should only show the current/last selected range, just to know the
size while dragging select area rectangle across large areas.

I too have wanted this same feature. I unwittingly duplicated it with 67725. It
is not so much for pasting, but for when formatting cells, adding borders or
whatever. Sometimes it can be really useful to know that you have just
highlighted 30 rows or whatever. I have always found it useful in Excel. I think
it would be good to display it as a tooltip, just like when you are highlighting
a range of cells for a formula.
