Description apjjr 2005-03-30 02:25:52 UTC
Writer does not handle linked objects in old MSWord DOC files.

I have a number of them and when opened in any version of OOo Writer, the
objects do not show up in any way at all. Wouldn't it be possible to at least
preserve the path to the source file? If I open the old DOC file in a pure text
editor, I can see the paths to the source files embeded in the file, but
nothing at all shows up in OOo Writer, just a blank page. These particular
links were to CAD drawings.
MSWord stored an image of the drawing in some format(who knows what), so that it
could display the linked files as they were when linked without starting the
application. You'd have to tell it to update the image if you changed the source.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not in any way pushing for a clone of M$W. I'm
just wondering what a good way of handling this situation may be and if any
developer may be interested in doing something along these lines. I'm sure
there are a lot of old M$W files out there that may need to be opend up and
edited. I can re-insert the objects in OOo after opening, but in many cases I
don't know what the source files were.

It would be nice if OOo Writer could handle that graphic format, whatever it is.

please attach the offending document (including the source file of the linked
object) to this issue, so that we can reproduce and fix the problem here. You
can also send the document directly (mru@openoffice.org) for the case it
contains confidential data. Feel free to re-open the issue when you've done.
Thanks for supporting us!

MRU->FLR: those are OLE links. These werenot supported by OO until 1.1.x. Now OO
2.0 also has this feature and should import these linked OLE objects in WW import.
Comment 4 apjjr 2005-04-12 20:25:12 UTC
OOo 1.9.91 will not show the linked objects.

Considering the effort, the priority, the risk and our resource planning I've to
retarget this issue to OOo Later.

changing target

I have a test case for this, see attached files.

In my test case (OOo 2.0.4) :
- copy an excel table (ok)
- linked Excel table "as text" (disapear when undated)
- linked Excel table (not showed)
- linked Graph (not showed)

As data disapear silently, i think it should be fixed soon.

Issue still exists in 2.2 (all OS).
See this thread : http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=56430
Confirmed with MS Word 2002 file (and OOo 2.2 from official OOo RPMs).

Absolutely no trace of any OLE object or any broken link.

The docx import filter consumed most of our resources in the "interop" area. Due
to that we must retarget this issue. -> 3.x
Comment 13 gibi 2010-05-19 16:23:52 UTC
Still alive in OOO320m17
Comment 14 dguembel 2010-07-26 16:05:12 UTC
This is IMHO a pretty unpleasant bug in OO that unfortunately exists since quite
some time. Is there any current activity re: fixing the issue, or any (rough,
but more precise than "3.x") idea when this is probable to be fixed?

If a tester or some other help beyond debugging in the code itself is needed,
I'd volunteer (building current code snapshots and testing with these builds for
example). Thanks.

Reset assigne to the default "issues@openoffice.apache.org".
