Description lars 2002-05-08 18:56:23 UTC
huh?

did sth. change in Oo Draw since StarDraw 3.1 ? No ?

Then throw it away.

Or do sth better than PaintShop Pro (I must wittness the same plain old old
boring image-filter).

Think about it!

What do want to be doing with Draw?

What's your goal?

A software which doesn't do anything better and which offers less
than an (already freely) existing software isn't needed by anyone.

I can elaborate, if you are interested . . . ?

Draw is needed at least as application displaying vector graphics
imported from other programs and allowing to make simple
modifications. Then the functionality is not so important, but the
supported import and export formats are critical.

At the moment: for example it does not display EPS files and does not
support a popular .FIG format. The formats supported seem to be
orthogonal to those used in other free vector graphics programs.

If I could display and print openooffice doduments containing
embedded .fig files I would not really need Draw.

I mentioned in Issue 6300 that I wrote in Issue 6298 the following,
which is the "elaboration" I "offered" to give in the 3rd add.
comment here:

- graphics editing functionality is lacking on the interaction side
with apps such as spreadsheet and on Draw itself. Draw is not as
easy (and not as powerful I've got the feeling) to handle as
Paintshop Pro, so that I am using that app. to do my bitmap
manipulations I need to do to insert bitmaps into Calc; that's not
efficient for small tasks (ie. changing some pixel colors) when
  wanting to do some work.
So the Draw-functionality (incl. o.c. interact. with other
app.s ...) should be improved (for example there is no link
(context menu entry) in bitmaps in Calc saying "edit with draw) -
could you redirect this information to relevant people for
  consideration ?

Just so to give a reason for the first few comments.

The new main request of this issue is in the summary :

   add FIG and EPS display

(my criticism of Draw remains though)

Reassigned to Falko.
Comment 8 falko.tesch 2003-09-23 16:06:52 UTC
There are no plans to enhance the filter capabilities of Draw for 2.0.
Therefore re-targeted to Office later with Prio 5.

What about at least displaing the preview of embedded EPS files? Lots
of other programs do it. It should be enough to just pass that EPS via
"gs" and display a bitmap. You really do not have to reinvent the
wheel here. And under Windows - well either there is gs there, or you
just display the same white rectangle as now.

Issue pre-approved, taken for Office later.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
