Description jeff_sadowski 2005-04-13 21:16:50 UTC
When opening Open Office Impress
and selecting "Open existing presentation"
I get the following error message which should not appear.
since I am not trying to load a template.
Error loading the template :
Incorrect format.
The file cannot be used as template.
the files extention is .pps
It is from a Microsoft Power Point Presentation
The Document works just fine. It looks like a simple
problem that I can just ignore the error.

I test it with some PPS-files but can't reproduce the bug.
Please attach a file to reproduce the bug.

The issue occurs if I try creating a new presentation then select
 "Open existing presentation"
and select the .pps file

and the default behavior when I open impress by itself is the same as creating
a new impress document

I can't reproduce it using OOo 1.9.118 on Windows XP SP2.
Please check if the problem persists with the latest OOo version.

I totally forgot about this issue I'll download 1.9.118 in a while and test it
out. But as of 1.9.117 the problem still exists. However I just noticed the
first time I Open a document it does not do the behavior its only after the
document becomes the first on the list. Its not a big enough bug to really worry
about but try these steps.
1. Open up Open Office Impress
this should open the "Presentation Wizard" if not your using it differently.
2. Select "Open existing presentation" if you do this for the first time the
list of items should be blank. Select the file that I uploaded. If this was the
first time you loaded my file the problem does not exist but a second time of
following steps 1 and 2 should produce the error at least it did in 1.9.117
I'll try 1.9.118 within the week. The first time I reported the error was on
Slackware 10 I am currently running Fedora 4 upgraded to current.

The file I uploaded is what MS Powerpoint produced so I assume that Powerpoint
named the extention .pps but like I said if I name it with the .ppt extention
the error does not exist. I'm guessing Impress wrongly assumes that a .pps
extention is a template. It could however be incorrect ussage of powerpoint. I
did not create the slideshow and I don't know what the difference is between
.ppt extention and .pps extention. Is .pps suppose to be a template? could be
the error message I get is correct and the file is named incorrectly. But I
don't know. Could be that .pps is not always a template and that the error
message is wrong.
Comment 9 jeff_sadowski 2005-07-27 23:13:12 UTC
from what I gather .pps is "power point Slide Show" and .ppt is "power point
file for editing"
Comment 10 christian.guenther 2005-08-31 16:10:21 UTC
Please tell me which system do you use (windows, linux...)
Comment 11 mgualtie 2005-09-03 02:07:14 UTC
I was able to duplicate the error (without using Jeff's slideshow) using OOo
1.9.125 on WindowsXP and Windows 2000. The .pps file will open when pressing
create, but the following error message appears after selecting the .pps file
from the list:

"Error loading template: Incorrect format. The file cannot be used as template."

Here are my steps:
1. Create a new presentation.
2. Save as MS Power point, but uncheck "automatic file name extension". Name it
3. Close Impress.
4. Open Impress and arrive at the "Presentation Wizard".
5. Select "Open existing presentation".
6. Select test.pps from the list. An error message should pop up.
7. If you press the create button, Impress will properly open the presentation.

I use Linux but it could be the user that created the presentation named it
like mgualtie did.
