Description trajj 2005-05-24 20:26:44 UTC
When I type two hyphens together, OO.o typically changes them to an em dash
after I type the word that is to follow. But if the word that follows the two
hyphens is in quotation marks, the hyphens are not changed to an em dash

The following sentence would have an em dash if typed in OO.o:

OpenOffice typically changes to hyphens to an em dashes--one long dash.

The next sentence would not produce an em dash in OO.o:

OpenOffice typically changes two hyphens to one long dash--"em dash."

Using Windows XP,
Using OO 2.1,

The original issue has been reported on version 2.0 Beta, but using version 2.1,
the issue could be exactly reproduced.

On OpenOffice Writer, Calc, or Impress start typing text

In the following cases, the two hyphens will change to a dash automatically
- If there is a space preceding AND following the two hyphens
        e.g. Text1 – Text2
Note: In this case the two hyphens have changed to a dash automatically
- If there are no spaces preceding or following the two hyphens
        e.g. Text1—Text2
Note: This dash is longer in length than the one in the previous case

In the following cases, the two hyphens will not change to a dash automatically
- If there is a space either preceding OR following the two hyphens
- If there is any character (other than alphabet) preceding or following the
two hyphens (having space before or after the two hyphens does not make a
   difference).
This was confirmed with the following characters, but most probably other
characters will give the same result:
                        “ / \ + ( , @ ~ ? < >

In cases where the automatic dash is desired but the text contains a symbol, the
text should be typed without any symbols at first. Once the first word after
the two hyphens is typed and a space after that is inserted, the two hyphens are
automatically changed to a dash and then the writer has to go back and insert
the symbol.

Comment 6 stefan.baltzer 2007-07-18 16:37:52 UTC
SBA: Same problem with quotation mark "TEXT? -- TEXT" does not get changed (see
duplicate issue above).
Comment 7 stefan.baltzer 2007-07-18 17:08:23 UTC
SBA: My comment above should read "...with question mark...".
However, in my opinion, this one is a duplicate of enhancement issue 5018.
