Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 50176
"Save to" of images embedded in text (and other?) documents
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:44:35 UTC
Today's ways to extract a picture from a document are rather laborious: - Copy/Paste to another application potentially modifes the image, since the target application will most probably re-encode it - unzip <document_name> is not really an option for the average user - Export->HTML is not really intuitive, and produces too much unwanted files Thus, a "Save Picture to..." functionality in the context menu of a picture (embedded in a text document), which exports/copies this picture to the file system, would be pretty useful.
The following snippet can surely be modified to only work for a single image/object, without linking the image... http://codesnippets.services.openoffice.org/Writer/Writer.ExtractGfx.snip

assigning to fl because in http://specs.openoffice.org/impress/menus/ContextMenus.odt he mentioned the problem of missing consistency between Writer and Draw/Impress And why not have this in Calc as well?
FL: Set target to OOo 3.0, because OOo 2.0.3 just implements the patch provided with #13816#. Furthermore we have to think about an improvement of the Bitmap Export dialog, currently used in Draw/Impress, because the resolution setting is no real resolution and just changes the logical size of the bitmap during export to get the desired resolution. Additionally the dialog has e a restriction to a maximum 2048 *2048 pixel. Not to forget to add a possibility to delete hidden areas of only logically cropped images, to allow resampling of images to a maximum resolution and to change the format of a bitmap to JPG for a reduction in size.

Issue 65264 mentions that the possiblility to save an image to a file is already present when the document is read-only. So it doesn't seem to be that hard to make the functionality available when the file is in read/write mode.
FL: Thank you for the pointer. Seems that this is a relict from a time when OOo was planned to be a browser. I have CCed mmp, because there is something similar (#13816) coming up with a patch for OOo 2.0.4 in Impress and maybe #65264# allows us to implement this also in Writer.
set target to OOo 2.x
Is this issue is still pending? It would be great to have this feature also for non read-only docs. I always missed it in Microsoft Word and I was happy to discover it in OpenOffice, but so far, only for read-only docs. Thanks for your efforts, Stefan
Set target to OOo 3.0.

Please support this feature
Set target to 3.x.
+1 for Calc
WindowsXP OOo 3.2 Writer: "save as" picture works fine. Calc: not presents this option at all. Very sad for me... I can 1) copy (drag`n`drop) image from Calc`s Navigator into Writer or 2) copy image into Gallery and then export it, but it`s not trivial way...
