We must be able to specify the number of columns of the resulted table. If by
chance you have a list separated only by ENTER:

Item1_Col1
Item2_Col2
Item3_Col3
Item4_Col1
Item5_Col2
Item6_Col3
Item7_Col1
Item8_Col2
Item9_Col3

and you wish a result like:
Item1_Col1 Item2_Col2 Item3_Col3
Item4_Col1 Item5_Col2 Item6_Col3
Item7_Col1 Item8_Col2 Item9_Col3

It's quite hard to obtain it without serious hard work.

one of the latest versions of OOo, as the problem(s) may have already been
addressed. Either use the recent stable version:

The same issue remained in 3.1 release.

We should have this option in the text to table form:
 - how many columns do you expect
