Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 50388
Insertion bar should be slanted for italic text
Last modified: 2005-06-23 21:45:53 UTC
The insertion bar (ie the blinking cursor rather than the mouse pointer) should become slanted when typing at its location will produce italic text. This is important because the way italics (and other formats) behave with the insertion point is different to Microsoft Word. Example: type 'alpha beta gamma'. Double-click to select 'beta' and make it italic. Now click to the immediate left of the 'g'. Hit backspace once. The space between words is removed. Now type anything (letters, or a space and then letters): it's in italic. On MS Word, it's not. (I'd file a bug report for this but I suspect it's a feature.)
Reassigned to SBA.
I cannot reproduce what you describe with backspace, type anew -> italic. At this point, the text I type is normal. But anyway, the purpose of your enhancement is to see in which formatting you are going to type. Better that the caret, the format icons of the toolbar (B, I, U,) show you at any time how the text is formattedc. So no need to slant the caret *only* for italic.

The slanted caret for italics is a feature in most modern word processors, and it seems odd to have it missing in OOo. On what build did you try to reproduce the backspace italic effect?
