Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 52755
.pps files should open in presentation mode as with PowerPoint
Last modified: 2016-03-17 17:30:09 UTC
If, during installation, a user choses to associate Microsoft PowerPoint documents with Open Office, the default behavior for a .pps (PowerPoint Show) file is changed to this: "C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 1.9.109\program\soffice.exe" -o "%1" This causes the presentation to be opened in edit mode when double clicked. However, when using Microsoft PowerPoint as the default handler, double clicking a .pps file causes it to immediately start the show. To achieve the same behavior, and hence ease the migration from MSO to OOo, I believe the default behavior for .pps files should be as follow durring installation: "C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 1.9.109\program\soffice.exe" -show "%1" (Note, however, that once a .pps show concludes using PowerPoint, the application closes, rather then enters edit mode like the -show argument causes Impress to do.)

Don't close this issue It's the default behavior for Go-oo build from 3.0. PPS is directly running in presentation mode. Nice and easy for newbies and old MS users. But it would be better if this behavior could be an option (tools menu) like a checkbox : [x] Running automaticly PPS file in presentation mode Please add for OOo

pls note: There is the separate Issue 96601 for the "'-show' command-line option, that should *instantly* open in presentation mode" problem.
This bug/enhancement request has been open since 2005. If AOO is expected to replace MSO or installed in computers without MSO then this feature is really needed. The same probably applies to starting ppsx and certainly applies to closing AOO after opening pps/ppsx https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=111311 Maybe this could be given a higher priority?
Since 2007, you can install ImpressRunner from the extensions repository, which does wat you require: http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/ImpressRunner
(In reply to oooforum from comment #10) > Since 2007, you can install ImpressRunner from the extensions repository, > which does wat you require: > http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/ImpressRunner I found this Extension but since this is a function that users expect from the office suite IMO it should not be a separate extension. FYI LibreOffice already does this without the need for an extension...
(In reply to Pedro from comment #11) > but since this is a function that users expect from > the office suite IMO it should not be a separate extension. I disagree with you. In my company, we don't want open pps with AOO. We use MS-Powerpoint viewer to read this files. So, integrate this extension is not a solution to everybody. Except, if AOO suggest a parameter to set this behavior (see comment #4).

I agree. Providing an option is always the best decision. I think that the installer/updater should check if .pps/.ppsx is already associated with some other program. If it is, don't touch it. If it is not then associate with AOO. If the user does not like this association he can disable this in the Options and/or use whatever program he/she prefers.
