Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 53281
redo/undo customization
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:38:35 UTC
The redo/undo function is a great feature, but it is a pitty that it only has one level, so having a dropdown menu to go back multiple levels in undo and to select an older redo would be great in many situations. As enhancement an option to customize the desktop via the redo function might be an easy solution. (By now one has to find the function again in the "customize" menu) If a "customize: function" beneath the undo, redo and repeat would be available in the edit menu, the customize window could be called with the function selected. Thereby the user can either be informed of the shortcut, the menu it can be found in or the icon which is associated with or can alter the entry. IMHO I guess this would be far better then the MS-Office approach where they hide specific menu entries.
Are you really using version 1.0.0? Then you should change to a newer version. http://download.openoffice.org/680/index.html In OOo1.9.22 there is a little triangle at the undo and at the redo symbol in the toolbar. It opens a dropdown list, were you can choose to which step you will go back. The number of that steps you can set in tools- options - OOo - memory. I do not see, why customizing in the edit-menu should be better than in the tools-menu and there you can customize menus, keyboard and bars as you like.
If I miss a point, you can reopen the issue. In that case please describe exact, what functionality you are missing in the newest public snapshot.
The problem is that you have to find the function again. At leas I usually look for a function (e.g. subscript -spending several minutes) and try whether it works as expected. If it does and I want to reuse it I have to find it again via tools-customize in a range of more then hundred entries. (which is pretty boring, at best - specially if you do not know where to look first) Only the toughest are willing to customize that way, so they rather leave it, staying frustrated behind because they do not know which shortcut-key they might press as an alternative. It is really a pain doing something twice, thereby the 'customize function' could really help
I was unclear about the place where "customize: function" might be placed: It depends on how you look at it: the edit menu is a natural approach in the way that the redo/undo/repeat functions all manipulate the recently activated functions. The tools menu also makes sense in a way, that customization is not "editing" anything and is more associated to "options", however an enhancement to select the recently used functions for customization might be placed there as well. (Drop down list in the menu and auto-selection within the customize function)
