Description meerlmi 2005-08-24 13:27:03 UTC
In all known word-processors software, selection of more than one word does
auto-select the complete first word where the selection started.

In OOo beta 2, this is not the case.
The same behaviour as other word-processors has to be set.

Reassigned to SBA.
Comment 2 ingenstans 2005-08-24 16:03:25 UTC
I can sonfirm this, in the sense that it is what happens. Whether it should
happen is a policy question.

And I think it's an enhancement, not a feature.

"In all known word-processors" ha-ha..

I agree with andrewb that the current behaviour is much better. I would regard
it as a bug if the software thinks it has to "correct" my selection randomly.

If you want wordwise selection, start your selection with a double-click.

I stronlgy suggest closing this as wontfix.

reassigning anyway.
Comment 4 meerlmi 2005-08-25 15:31:06 UTC
View this than as an option to be put on UI (Preferences).
Most word-processors are used in administrations and offices where fast things
have to be done. All secretaries I know expect this behaviour.

BTW : all known word-processors software means for me not only MS things but
also all other commercial ones.

Kind regards,

Michel De Meerleer

Yes, this is missed very much by all persons i know. I have been looking for it since the first
days with OO-1.1. Years have passed, but nothing has happend. I hope the dev's will take this
one seriously, because millions of people would like to see it integrated, but don't know (like
myself before) how to make their voice be heard.

Dear developers!

You are doing a really good job. That is out of the question. I would write this patch myself
and happily submitt it to you. But i'm not a programmer. This issue, along with the missed
sticky tabstops, the indent wich would not be captured when moving back to zero, and things
like that ... These are things might be just minor issues for a dev. But they are widely used,
billions of times each day in the office, in the lab, by millions of people. And we miss it every
time. Please enhance user experience. USER EXPERIENCE COMES FIRST - ALWAYS. We
miss these features more than most other new features you have added, because we use it
daily, in every writing. What use if we have the most kinky features in OO, wich will be used
very seldom, and instead of basic features are being missed, wich will be used nerly every
minute? It would make our day's much simpler and more productive and would certainly lead
to a greater distribution of OO. If these features would be integrated, many persons will drop
MS-Office and use OO. Because it would then match their needs for look and feel.

It's silly to dismiss this feature as undesirable. Of course it should be an
option one could turn off, because it can be annoying for certain users/uses.
But on the whole, this 'fuzzy' kind of text selection is a great boon if you do
a lot of editing. A firm vote in favour.

I prefer the "OOo way", but for my part an option "mark words as MS WORD" can be
added.

Any idea why "mark additional complete words" only works in WRITER, but not in
CALC, DRAW, ... (pls see. Issue 103495!)
