I've discovered recently that calc of oo2 can't detect and convert the text of a
column like ms office does with the funcion of the same name.

This causes problems with exported data from other programs (closed software
ones) that can export to .xls format which can be opened from Calc, but we can
not operate with the data of the xls because oo2 detects the cell content like
text not as number.

The options in language settings only afects the data entered from keyboard not
existing exported data on the grid.

I've attached a sample ods document showing this. And if you want to understand
what I'm talking about, try to operate the data showed in column labeled
"Import" and do a summatory at the end of the column.
In excel you can do it selecting the column and going to "data" menu and
clicking in "Text in columns" and then select the desired format for the content
on the cells. This cannot be done in oo2 AFAIK.

Let me know if I'm doing something wrong or I've missed something.

That's a very old feature request. Please see issue 4040. There is a macro
mentioned as workaround, but I have not tested it. The other workaround is, to
save your data to csv-format and import them via insert -> sheet from file.
