Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 56510
Images in WORD document not displayed unless filename contais underscore "_"
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:44:35 UTC
Jpeg images imbedded in Word doc "SoldierR.doc" are not displayed on screen or printed. Image placeholder and link name are displayed and printed eg. "http://image001.jpg/". The document takes a long time to load (> 2 minutes), and also generates a lot of internet traffic when loading. When using Word 2003, the document opens immediately, images are displayed correctly, and no internet traffic is generated. When I was checking the help area of OO, a Graphics On/Off Icon was described but I was unable to find this icon. This problem may be related to Issues 43833 & 39710.
Created attachment 30758 [details] images are not displayed in OO Writer
I checked with 2.0 German version WIN XP: [680m3(Build8968)] and also saw the problem. Images are included with therms like '{ INCLUDEPICTURE \d "image001.jpg"\*MERGEFORMATINET }' That works for WORD2000, I can see the images. When I open the document with OOo 2.0, I only see placeholder-images with wrong hyperlink http://image001.jpg, that link will also be shown in the image properties box. I believe the internet traffic is caused by the wrong internet hyperlink 'http://image001.jpg' 1.1.4 (German) WIN XP: [645m52 (Build 8824)] opened the document without problems and showed the images.
MRU->FLR: the graphics in this document seem to be generated by internet links, but are also stored (embedded) in the file format. The links seem to be invalid by now. So Word uses the embedded information. Also, when updating the "includepicture" fields in Word, the graphic content will also disappear there. The filter should also use the embedded information instead of the invalid links.

When I doubleclick the frame to open the picture-dialogue to modify the link and click on the [...] Button in the link-area
... now the rest of the text: when I click on the [...]-Button OOo crashes. (it seems it appears only in converted documents word -> writer with linked images

In trying to replicate the bug, I created a doc file (word 2003; see my attachment) with text (copied and pasted from the problematic file) and 3 images: a gif, a jpeg and a clip art. It might be useful to investigate the creation process of the problematic file in order to identify the formating that causes the problem.
I think 'Additional comments from mru Tue Oct 25 02:58:59 -0800 2005' hits the problem. But now I saw a surprise. I opened the testfile "SoldierR.doc" with, and al images were shown without problem ?!?! Before this succes, I tried to open it with "2.0.1 RC5 German version WIN XP: [680m1(Build8990)]", that caused a "hang". Then I opened it with the same version "as encoded Text", only for interest. After finishing 2.0.1 I tried with "2.0 German version WIN XP: [680m3(Build8968)]", and the images were visible. No Idea, why!
I can reproduce the problem with 2.0.1, too. As the attached document looks fine in 1.1.5 (all images are visible), I set the regression keyword.
We tried again to reproduce the problem and found out, that the reason for it is only the filename of the used images. All images which filenames contain an underscore "_" are displayed correctly, if the underscore is missing, they are not visible in OOo. I'll attach another test doc, filed with Word 2003: Inserted two identical images which only differ in the filename. Changing OS to all, occurs on WinXP and Linux.
Created attachment 34199 [details] test doc with two identical images (only different filenames)
I had problems with the import of worddocuments once more. I dont know what the problem is, but the linke pictures with the underscore are not shown in some documents. I imported it in Ooo 1.1.5 and saved the files. here was everything ok. Please fix the problems!

Pls. read my detailed comments from rainerbielefeld Thu Mar 2 10:40:57 -0800 2006 in Issue 62517 concerning similar problems, may be that you will find useful hints.

The number of duplicate to this issue is getting longer, so I decided to fix this issue for next major release.
Given the number of duplicates and votes you might want to reconsider the target.
Yes, we have many duplicates for this. Also the fact that this is broken functionality (even with valid Internet acces and correct proxy settings OO 2.0.x does not show the graphics) makes this a 2.x candidate. Retargeted to 2.x.
SBA->MBA: Please proceed. I advocate a fix for OOo 2.04 Reasigned to MBA.

I'm very new to IssueZilla and didn't see the 'Create a new attchment' links before. So, this is it for these patches. They're just simple hacks to support Thai in OOo which we're using in our Thai version of OOo 1.0.1 (OfficeTLE). I understand that ignoring the differences between TIS-620 and Windows-874 may pose some problems in the future such as sending the wrong character to the internet. Regarding TIS-620 vs Windows-874, please continue the discussion in i6659. I have opened SoldierR.doc in the Germanophone version of OOo 2.0.4 RC3 under Debian Sid, and all images appear. So this issue seems to be fixed ... ;) Could someone else with a different OS can confirm this? Maybe lton2, could you check it again? If so, could someone close this issue please
cannot confirm that this is fixed on WinXP (2.0.4RC3, german localized version). SoldieR.doc shows no images at all (but http:// URLs instead).
Still broken on Pardus Linux OpenOffice 2.0.3 rc3.
The problem is still there on OOo-2.0.4-RC3-de on Linux-RPM.
Henning, please analyze the content of the attached document. It seems that we fail to detect the images as embedded ones.
Dear developers, any plans for this one?
Henning, Mathias, please consider this annoying bug for 2.4 as it is last of 2.x releases (not to mention that it hurts our customers). Thanks a lot for your attention! WBR, KP.
target 3.0
Hi there. I opened this issue in 2005 an i'm waiting for a solution since then. Target 3.0... me and my pals wanted to have it soon - when will 3.0 be relased? I dont get it cause it worked in 1.5 and since 2.0 it didnt. Target 3.0 makes me sad...
reset target due to lack of resources
Hello @ll, I have tested SoldierR.doc again and it still works for me with OOo 3.0 RC2 under Debian SID/Experimental AMD64. Would someone be so kind to test it with an other OS/architecture, please? If this issue is (hopefully) fixed there, could someone close this issue, please? TIA Thomas.
I checked with "Ooo 3.0.0 RC1 Multilingual version English UI WIN XP: [OOO300m5 (Build9350)]": also ok! So Resolved WFM.
I have also tested SoldierR.doc and Test.zip. Both open correctly in OO 3.0.0 RC2 on Win XP SP3, English.
