There is an embarassing screenshot of a performance problem here:

      As you can see from the image to calculate the ScTabView::CalcZoom zoom
level [ I think for some 'optimal' zoom setting ] - before we show the
spreadsheet we go and paginate the entire worksheet, and then throw
virtually all that information away to guess a sensible zoom level ;-)
of course paginating a potentially vast spreadsheet can be seriously
time consuming. 1/3rd of the load time ;-)

Yes, this looks like it should be changed. But it won't be done in time for
2.0.2, so I'm changing the target to 2.0.3.

This issue originally targeted as OOo 2.03. 

and now we almost have OOo 2.3. 
I hope this will be considered again for the 2.3
