Description deviros 2006-01-12 17:43:12 UTC
When the process soffice.bin remains active in the task manager for a few hours,
eventually the CPU Usage starts peaking around 95-100%. Further investigation
shows that lsass.exe is using between 50-75%, with soffice.bin utilizing the
remainng amount, and crss will occaisonally join in the fray with a peak of
about 20%.

Force Quit on soffice.bin IMMEDIATELY drops lsass to 0, where it belongs,
showing that soffice.bin appears to be the culprit in this case.

deviros,
it does not happen to me when OO is idle.
Resolving as WFM.
Please upgrade to soon to be released 2.2 and see it you still experience the
problem.

Though, you are right - sometimes soffice.bin can cause lsass.exe to consume a
lot of CPU cycles.

and closing.
Comment 4 raphmaz 2007-05-16 16:54:07 UTC
My OOo 2.2 shows the same problem. Happens several times a day, often when
copy-pasting content from Adobe apps into Impress.

Note: this situation completely freezes OOo and all unsaved work is wiped
(recovery does get triggered on restart but brings up the last saved version).

(It's been 10 minutes alreday, but I'm now waiting to see if it eventually does
recover as I've got 2h of work that will be wiped if I kill it now, will comment
again tomorrow morning if it does come unstuck after several hours.)

Comment 5 shinobu_maehara 2007-07-22 11:20:39 UTC
Confirmed this issue. For me it usually occurs when it has been running idle
for a long period of time, or if I have used the "sleep mode" of the computer
(so that it has effectively been running for a long time). But it also
sometimes suddenly starts to do this on a freshly booted computer; since I
don't know what causes it, to me it appears rather unpredictable.

How to reproduce: leave your computer running for a long time. Note that at
some point your computer becomes slow as tar and things like explorer's
autocomplete stop working and your music starts to skip. Notice how the CPU
usage sits at 100%, sometimes dropping to 99%. Now suspend soffice.bin. Notice
how the CPU usage droppes to a few percent, depending on what you were doing
of course. Now resume soffice.bin. Notice that CPU usage sits at 100% again.
The ratio lsass / soffice is about 60% / 40% for me, but the basic symptom is
the same.
Comment 6 shinobu_maehara 2007-07-22 11:25:39 UTC
P.S. Can someone please reopen this issue? This is not a "worksforme" anymore,
since it has been reported by sever people now. Since I've got some actual
work to do with my PC I've killed soffice.bin, but next time the problem
occurs I'll try to break in with a debugger and send you a stack trace (if
possible).
Comment 7 shinobu_maehara 2007-09-17 17:14:46 UTC
Why did no one reopen this issue, like I asked? Here is the promised stack
trace. I've also got a memory dump if you want it.

Note: the only reason it didn't grab 100% CPU time was because some other
processes were running with a higher priority. It is at this point grabbing
all the CPU time it can get; several things don't work anymore (autocompletion
in e.g. the Windows run dialog) or very slowly because they're starved for CPU
time.

When running, the likely offending thread appears to generate a lot of
800706ba exceptions, which are apparently handled, since only first chance
exceptions are shown. Don't now if this is significant.

As you can see, this really does happen, so reopen the issue already.
Comment 8 Olaf Felka 2007-09-17 17:59:06 UTC
Your information is pretty outdated. Can you reproduce with a newer version? OOo
2.3 is close to be released so no developer would spend to much time for OOo
2.1. Nevertheless I've CCed a someone who might have a look.
Comment 9 deviros 2007-09-18 06:34:21 UTC
I'm going to re-open this issue...

I apologize for the hiatus...i haven't been around for a while...

I've noticed that 2.2 is beginning to cause the same problems...i'll have to
investigate further but here's what i've noticed so far:

when i am running Windows in Parallels, the issue seems more prevalent, and, in
fact, it seems to be the only time it happens, though not to the degree of
hogging that i had seen with 2.0, only about 70-80% of the CPU is used (leaving
20% free, unlike the total 100% as seen before)

However, when running windows in Boot Camp, i have yet to see this issue to the
same degree, i only hit around 30% (so far).

Like i said, i'll need to first:

upgrade to 2.3
recreate it (it's not as frequent) - both in Boot camp and Parallels
get a stack trace or otherwise see some evidence of oo.o mucking it up.
re-post here.

Parallels uses a completely different hardware configuration from Boot Camp, so
that may be part of the issue. we'll see...

I am seeing this problem on 2.3.1 on Windows XP. soffice.bin and lsass.exe take
up 100% of CPU.

I let my system run overnight but no change. I could not use OO - had to kill
the process.

I get this problem whenever I open a Visio object and do a copy of a large
bitmap and then try to close Visio. It is totally repeatable on my machine.

Please update version to 2.3.1

I've just noticed this issue in 3.3.0 - OO completely frozen, lsass at 35%, soffice at 15%. (At least, unlike a user below, my work was saved after forcibly crashing and re-starting).

So after all these years and versions, it hasn't gone away you know...

...by the way, I should mention that the use of "..." at the end of my previous post is shorthand for "please feel free to ask me any questions you wish, and I will answer and provide information as best I can, to help solve the problem"!

I am having a similar issue and this thread was the closest to fitting my issue. I'm not a techie so I will describe this as best I can. I have 3.4.1 - recently upgraded from previous version. I am running XP Pro SP 3, 3 Ghz P4, 2.5 Gb RAM.

When I open any OOo document things run well briefly. Then in Task Manager I spike to 100%. Opening TM soffice.bin is drawing on the processor 97% to 99%. (I also have a "phantom" quick start icon for OOo in my task bar until I mouse over it.) This will continue even if I quit OOo. I have to manually end soffice.bin which then releases it's stranglehold on the processor, returning all running programs back to normal. When trying to work with a spreadsheet everything runs slowly, updating somewhat reluctantly. I have not lost work yet and docs seem to save okay.

I have had instances where things don't act up while the document is open, but soffice.bin will kick in after closing OOo. Again, I have to manually end soffice.bin to be able to continue to work without the slow down this causes. Have not been able to replicate this with any consistency to offer more info.

Snag: Sometimes this issue does not happen - but only in rare instances which I have not been able to replicate in enough detail to offer more information.
