Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 61470
Import of background graphics from 97/2000/XP doc file fails
Last modified: 2006-02-01 15:38:22 UTC
operating system: Linux (Slackware 10.2), MS Windows XP SP2 OO version: 2.0.1 problem: 1. Make a document in OO Writer containing a background graphics (Format|Page|Background|As Graphic|Browse -> select image) 2. Save document in MS Word 97/2000/xp doc format. 3. Close the document. 4. Open the document with MS Word 2003. Background graphics is there, meaning it was properly exported by OO Writer. 5. Open the document with OO Writer. The background graphics is gone ! It is not imported at all (now it will be lost in doc file too, if you edit and save the doc file again). The same happens if document from step 1 is made in MS Word 2003 (Format|Background|Fill Effects|Picture|Select Picture -> select image). I consider this not to be a duplicate of 56806, hence there the background graphics doesn't get exported at all (at least it is described so in the issue). In this case it does get exported (you can open it in MS Word 2003), but it does not get back imported when you open it with OO Writer. It can be very annoying, e.g. if somebody sends you a MS doc file containing background graphics, let's say to fill in some data, and you send it back with the data filled in, but without the background graphics.
It seems OpenOffice does not have an import filter to handle '.doc' files with a page background. Your problem appears to have the same cause as Issue 56806. I am marking this as a duplicate. ->'stjepan', if you don't want this closed as a duplicate, please provide evidence and further information. Regards, Andrew *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 56806 ***
OK we leave it as a duplicate. However, I believe that, if export filter already exists, it would be fairly reasonable to add import filter as well. It's not quite logical that I am able to successfully save a document but not to correctly read it thereafter : )
I agree with your comments. Please add them to Issue 56806, cheers. Closing.
