Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 61525
Integrate user dictionary and spell checker for custom word capitalisation and affixation
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:29:28 UTC
It is a very useful feature, especially for languages with rich morphology. Capitalisation: http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=18737 Proposal for the new user dictionary format: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=60698 Need a (simple or a more sophisticated) GUI extension, too. Example for a simple version: "add custom word" dialog suggest or receives a pattern for a word. We can add a new proper name, for example "Tesco", and also choose (or add) a known (=dictionary) proper name, for example "John". User words handled by spell checker, and "Tesco's" or TESCO'S" will be right words, similar to "John's" and "JOHN'S". (For Hungarian, it is the most wanted feature in spell checking. This example in Hungarian: Tesco, pattern word: Francisco, results: Tescót, Tescóban, Tescóról etc., etc. (Spell checker can recognize 2-3 thousands word forms formed from Tesco!)

The "Options" dialog reachable via the spellcheck process dialog exposes a list of user dictionaries, thus suggesting that this functionality is already present which apparently is not the case.
In the previous, I forgot to mention that I experienced this behavior in OOo 3.0.0 on windows XP (32-bit), OOO300m9 (Build: 9358). Also, further testing showed that the following procedure is a workaround: Condition: A user dictionary has been set up is added to the list of dictionaries to be used by spell checking. Spellcheck is run, an unknown word is encountered. Step 1: add the word to a user dictionary Step 2: terminate the spell check Step 3: restart the spell check. Result: the word will now be recognised. I have (in the aforementioned version) confirmed that adding the word alone is not sufficient to let the running spell check recognise the word. Spellchecking has to be restarted to let the word be recognised.
"I have (in the aforementioned version) confirmed that adding the word alone is not sufficient to let the running spell check recognise the word. Spellchecking has to be restarted to let the word be recognised." That should not be true. Please be a little patient. After a few seconds the spell checker will check that word again. And you should probably not leave the cursor inside the word, since words that are still being edited (i.e. where the cursor is in) will usually not get spell checked.
