Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 62629
Read only prevents from viewing embedded OLE-objects, especially PDF documents.
Last modified: 2014-02-20 11:10:21 UTC
When switching a .xls file to read-only and opening with Calc, an embedded PDF file will not be able to be opened. We have countless files that have embedded pdfs for diagrams, but when we limit the users power to read-only on the .xls, the Acrobat graphic to the embedded file is unusable. It only appears as a graphic, but no longer links. If we turn the .xls file back to full privilages, then the pdf file will open when clicked on inside of the file. Please let me know if you have any thoughts! Thanks, Jordan
Hi, in no way a Prio 1 Issue. Please attach a file showing the problematic behaviour. Thanks Frank

I checked with "1.1.4 (German) WIN XP: [645m52 (Build 8824)]", because some other bugs currently make it impossible to test that completely with 2.0.1. But with "2.0.1 RC5 German version WIN XP: [680m1(Build8990)]" i've got similar results. It is as the reporter says, if you open 'OOOReadOnlyError.xls' or any other OOo document with embedded OLE objects, the OLE objects can't be opened. That's the same for an embedded OOo-DRAW-object. In general, that is the desired behaviour, because it is not acceptable that embedded OLE objects can be edited while the embedding document is "read only". The special thing here is, that AR is a "read only" application, so that it might be allowable that those embedded OLE objects can be opened with AR from the "read only" document. But: What will be, if some users have not AR, but "Acrobat 7.0 Professionalas" selected as "Reader" in their OS? Suddenly there will be a possibility to edit embedded contents. A solution could be to allow only "Open OLE with set 'Read Only Flag'" (if something like that is available). Also it might be a good Idea to add a further preference to the "Microsoft Office Load/Save Options. This is no special spreadsheet- or .xls- issue @jordzgreed: pls. specify your OS!
