Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 62993
recovery user interface
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:32:37 UTC
When OOo Impress crashes, a recovery interface appears. The UI interface has several serious problems. -- It is intrusive. When I open OOo after a crash, some time may have passed. I may want to start a new document and not have to think about what happened to the old one or whether I should recover it. -- I can't make it go away. Even though I tell it I don't want to recover, it will keep asking about it for some time. -- The consequences of the choices are unclear. What does it mean to "recover" the document? What happens to the old document? Is the document that's on disk right now usable? I'd suggest the following. -- Scrap the modal dialogs completely, both for recovery and for crash reporting. Replace them with a status-bar indicator (say, a red dot), that indicates that recoverable documents are available. The user can recover documents by clicking on that dot. -- When a user doesn't recover a document but does attempt to load a document for which recovery is possible, then pop up a dialog that says something like: "This document was open when OOo crashed. [ Show Differences] Show the differences betweent the last saved version and the recovered version. You have several choices: [x] Attempt to recover the document at the time of crash, including all edits. [x] Keep the previous version of the document as a backup. [ ] Revert to the last saved state of the document prior to the crash. [ ] Keep a recovered version of the document as a backup. [ OK ] [ Cancel ]" I'm submitting this as a DEFECT because it really is a defect in the UI; the current UI is seriously broken.
The recovery dialog is the same for all applications, there is nothing impress-specific. Changing component.
