Description raindrops 2006-03-15 10:10:05 UTC
Often, while reading a long document, we want to search for a particular word.
We use the Find function for this. Often, the intention is just to look up the
text containing that keyword, and then return to our reading.

But Writer does not help the reader here: The Find function goes around the
document endlessly. This in itself is rather useless: Why would a user want to
scan the document more than once? At least Writer should tell him that they have
reached the starting point; and does he want to go on?

Secondly, the user is taken AWAY from the page he was browsing, and left at an
unfamiliar point. He has to browse through the entire document to come back
where he left off.

Now consider the case where the user aborts the search (by pressing Cancel or
ESC). In this case, the user is left where OOo found the last match.

In both cases, the OOo behavior is undesirable: After searching the document,
the Find function should leave the user at the precise point where he started.

This is what MS Word does. It even provides a helpful summary statement while
dropping us off. OOo should do the same (the statement could be "total x matches
found. The search was completed/aborted." (only one of the "completed" and
"aborted" should be shown in the message, to reflect what happened.

The issue can be understood better by comparing it with a city tour operator
service:

OPerator A takes us around the city, and keeps visiting the same spots
repeatedly till we ask the driver to stop. He lets us get off at the last spot.
We have to catch a cab to reach home/hotel.

Operator B also takes us around the city, but he shows us the city only once.
After that, if we want, we can have another round. In case we stop him midway
through the tour, he takes us back to the spot where we boarded the bus.

I don't know about others, but I would prefer operator B any time.
