Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 64262
Not all presets are inherited
Last modified: 2006-04-12 10:52:00 UTC
According to the help documentation you should be able to distribute settings to all new OOo-users of a machine by copying the users' "user"-directory to a directory called "presets" under the machines' OOo main software directory. Although this works for some settings (AutoCorrect, User data, Writer basic fonts), it doesn't work for others (Load/save: save Writer documents in Word format, Language Settings: deselect user dictionaries "soffice" and "sun"). This issue is for the US version. I will submit a separate issue for the DA version.
I set the priority as P1 - should probably be P2.
"According to the help documentation you should be able to distribute settings to all new OOo-users of a machine by copying the users' "user"-directory to a directory called "presets" under the machines' OOo main software directory." I can't find this section in the online help.
Even not a P2 issue. Nothing like this is written in the Online Help.
"Nothing like this is written in the Online Help." The Online Help page for "Paths" says: "When the user first starts OpenOffice.org, the {user} directory is copied from the {netinstall}/presets directory."
What is written in the online help is just a part of what happens on start up. It's not intended to describe this in the online help. This has nothing to do with the application. I think this is 'tech talk'. We should change this help chapter as an example what happen on start up, not as a 'how to'.

It was requested in the past to describe the main paths of an office installation, why they exist and what they are used for. This is why there is info about paths in that online help file. You deduct some functionality from that info which is not there. If you need more info about office installation for many users, please have a look at the "Administration Guide" at http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/coll/1263.1
I don't originally have the information about the purpose of the presets directory from the online help. I think I have it from a press release stating that the presets catalog was a new facility that made it possible for sysadmins to easily publish settings to all new users. If I'm not mistaken it was in the press release for OOo 2.0.1. I will try to find this information for you. Anyway, if the purpose of the presets directory is not as described, what it is? I don't believe the developers made this directory without a purpose. Furthermore, the described functionality actually works half-way, which reinforces my theory about what the intentions were. Please don't just play the "INVALID" card so quickly, and without a dialog with the reporter of the bug. I have experienced this before, and it's actually very annoying. I can accept that you close the issue if you can convince me that I'm really totally wrong about the purpose of the presets directory.
This is an issue for online help. The topic of deploying office for many users on a network is not part of the online help. As I wrote, the Administration Guide has all that information. If you want to submit an issue that the mechanism with "preset" and "user" folders does not work correct, please submit an issue to the appropriate component's owner. On a first and second guess I would submit it to the "installation" or the "framework" component.
"If you want to submit an issue that the mechanism with "preset" and "user" folders does not work correct, please submit an issue to the appropriate component's owner. On a first and second guess I would submit it to the "installation" or the "framework" component." I thought I had submitted an issue to the "installation" component. Now I see that this issue is registered as concerning "documentation". Is it me who actually made a mistake? Of course it should have been "installation".
I have requested that issue 64264 is reopened. This issue (64462) can be closed.
