Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 6465
enhancement to windows multi-user installation information
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:34:07 UTC
i wanted to thank you for Lee Corbin's "Windows Set Up" guide at http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/instructions.html .. i would not have been able to install OOo on my windows xp box for multiple users without it and knowing about /net. I appreciate that he took the time to help others out, since the setup for multiple users on Windows is less-than-intuitive (at this point :) i was wondering if it would be okay to make a couple of suggestions for extensions to the documentation in the "Multiple users" section, until the installation process itself is improved? this would be to help any of the other newbies to OOo out there, like myself..? In the Multiple users section, at the end, Lee says: ============================================================================ "This will install a shared version of OpenOffice.org 1.0 on your computer. Now each user who wishes to use the program can double click on the program setup.exe that was created in the folder you have made a note of in step 4 above - this will install the files necessary for that user and use only a few additional megabytes of disk space." ============================================================================ This is good, and was quite helpful in letting me know how to get started, and that each user should run the setup program themselves. Nevertheless, I still came across some really confusing (for me) areas in the "end-user install", i'll call it, that OOo throws at them (me!), and wanted to add a couple of extra tips which might help the end-user-installer get over these problem areas. For instance, at one point, the user is asked whether they would like a "Workstation Installation" or a "Local Installation". This language is confusing to the user since a) their workstation *IS* local to them, and thus they are not mutually-exclusive categories, and b) the explanations under each of these two sections are even more confusing: under "Workstation Installation" it explains that one chooses this to be able to run OOo from the network which is NOT what the user necessarily wants. Furthermore, "Local Installation" indicates that the software will be installed on the local computer, BUT that would be true BOTH for whether it is installed for multiple users or for just this user. So at this point, the user is very confused and left to blindly try both options, with a 50% chance of making a wrong decision and having to back out later from something he or she didn't want.. Also that is just one example. Another has to do with the installation directory, which does not default to what the user really wants (since the software is already installed there!) Instead, the user wants to install some minimal files under their own home directory. And the explanation with regard to whether it should be the default application for MS-Office file-types could be clearer, too. So here are the additional tips. The first paragraph is still Lee's: ============================================================================ This will install a shared version of OpenOffice.org 1.0 on your computer. Now each user who wishes to use the program can double click on the program setup.exe that was created in the folder you have made a note of in step 4 above - this will install the files necessary for that user and use only a few additional megabytes of disk space. Each user does this: 5) Open up the install directory/folder where OpenOffice.org 1.0.1 was installed (such as C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org1.0.1) and run OpenOffice.org setup.exe. 6) When you get to the dialog box titled, "Select Installation Type", choose "Workstation Installation" and click "Next>>". 7) In the dialog box titled, "Select Installation Directory", under the section titled, "Installation directory", click the "Browse" button. A "Select Directory" dialog will pop up, and should be set currently to "C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org1.0" (which you DON'T want). 8) In the middle-left window, double-click on "C:\". Double-click on "Documents and Settings". Double-click on your user-name. (For instance, i clicked on "jeff" on my machine) -- whatever you signed in as. Double-click on "Application Data". Now, in the top-left window, it should say, "C:\Documents and Settings\jeff\Application Data". Put the cursor right after the 'a' in Data and add in "\OpenOffice.org1.0.1". The entire line should now read: C:\Documents and Settings\<your-username>\Application Data\OpenOffice.org1.0.1 for instance, mine says: C:\Documents and Settings\jeff\Application Data\OpenOffice.org1.0 9) Click on "Create Directory" button. This creates the directory. 10) Click on "OK" button. Now you are back at the "Select Installation Directory" window, and the installation directory you just made now appears in the "Installation directory" field. Click "Next>>". 11) In the "Setup Program for OpenOffice.org 1.0" dialog box that comes up, it will ask you to check the file-types that are to be opened with OpenOffice.org 1.0. This could be a bit confusing for some users. Contrary to what it says, OpenOffice.org *will* open these file types, whether you select these choices or not. What is really meant here is that when you double-click on the icons for these file-types (like ".doc" files, which are Microsoft Word documents), what will be started is OpenOffice, NOT Microsoft Word. So only leave these options checked if: a) you do not have these programs (Microsoft Word, etc.) on your computer, OR b) you *do* have these programs installed on your computer, but you do not want them to be the default programs that are run when you double-click on these file-types. ============================================================================ By the way, i think the whole setup process needs to be re-vamped (both for Windows and Linux/Unix/Solaris/etc.) but that's perhaps a different IssueZilla.. Thanks for letting me make these suggestions, and once again, thank you for your setup-guide which is already very helpful, and let me know if there's any other way I can be of help.
reassigning to dirk - I don't think Oliver will work on these issues any more.
Looks like this one is for you.
