Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 65091
Implement incremental online update
Last modified: 2010-11-11 00:21:12 UTC
This is very similar to bug #64197 I commented to that, but no one re-opened it yet. An online incremental update system would be extremely useful. This would 1. prevent user from keeping an old version with known security vulnerabilities 2. let user update an existing version online, instead of forcing the user to uninstall an old version (2.0.1 for example) in order to install a newer version (2.0.2 for instance. the user (who may have dial up, a common type of connection indeed0 will not have to download the whole Office Suite this way. The Suite download takes about 5-6 hours over a 5k/s dial up connection. To clarify: * OS: Linux, Windows, Mac (do we have a Mac port?) * What kind of updates and from where to download/install: updates/patches that would for example update OOo 2.0.2 to 2.0.3 and so on; updates would come from a repository. * OOo stable release builds: yes * Developer builds: optional, configurable by user * Some kind of patches: incremental patches instead of downloading the whole setup from scratch * New major versions of OOo: incremental like 1.1 to 1.2; 2.0.2 to 2.1.4; 3.0 to 3.0.1 etc. No need to implement 2.x to 3.x updates, if doing so will make this feature harder to implement. * One could maybe use Firefox's incremental online update mechanism/code as a starting point for this feature.
