Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 6594
Inconsistent behaviour when adjusting table column widths
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:41:36 UTC
When the width of a column in a table is adjusted, the adjacent cells are supposed to behave as specified in Tools->Options->Text Document->Table- >Behaviour. The choices are "fixed", "fixed, proportional", or "variable". However these behavioural settings are only adhered to if the column width is adjusted using the keyboard shortcuts (Alt + left/right arrow). If the width is adjusted using the mouse, or the Column Width dialog box (e.g. via the context menu), then the behaviour is always as if "fixed" had been chosen. To reproduce: 1) Insert a table into the document 2) Tools->Options->Text Document->Table->Behaviour, select "variable" (alternatively, this can be done from the Table toolbar) 3) Adjust width of a column using the keyboard shortcuts -> width of whole table will change accordingly 4) Right-click to bring up the context menu, select Column->Width 5) edit value in Column field, click OK -> table width stays the same
Tim, thank you for using and supporting OOo. Duplicated on Win NT 4.0 SP6a, OOo 1.0.1.

Duplicated on WinXP Pro, OOo 1.0.3
dvo: That's an user interface issue; I've asked os about it. He says the behaviour is intended and correct, since the option for table behaviour is supposed to affect only the keyboard shortcuts. Dragging columns with the mouse is intended to behave like 'fixed'. So... since behaviour is as the developer intended, it's technically not a bug. I'll mark the issue as 'invalid'. If you disagree which this intended behaviour, please re-open the issue and re-assign it to Frank (fl@openoffice.org). He'd be a suitable addressee if we would want to change OOo behaviour.
close issue as dvo suggested.
