Description jkonecn 2006-06-09 14:49:17 UTC
When I try to drag and drop a pdf into OOo I get the following errors...

Calc - Works
Writer - Get strange characters all over document
Impress - General Error General Input/Output Error.
Draw - General Error General Input/Output Error.

Sorry if I classified the component wrong but I didn't see where to put this issue.

Were you trying to drag and drop the file or a section of text? Text selections
(and graphics) should be able to be cut and paste normally. Does that work? If
you were trying to drag and drop a file then OOo won't read a PDF, only write
it, hence the funny errors you got.

Can you confirm what you were doing. If it was a text selection you've got a
problem (it should work) but if it's a file, OOo doesn't support PDF.

I was trying to drag and drop a pdf file into a OOo document. In OOo 2.0 and
maybe up to 2.0.3 I was able to drag a pdf file and drop it onto a calc
spreadsheet. It then showed the pdf right on the spreadsheet (using ole) and it
worked great. I tested this with writer, impress and draw and got the errors
shown below. OOo should be able to display an ole object in all of it's apps
much like ms office is able to do. I then upgraded to 2.0.4 and retested. Now
none of the apps are able to display a pdf as an ole object. OOo doesn't have
to be able to "read" a pdf, it just has to display it as an ole object.

I checked with "2.0.2 German version WIN XP: [680m5(Build9011)]", installed AR
7.0.8 and can confirm the problem.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Download testkit and unzip ('Testfile.odt' is the source for 'Testfile.pdf')
2. Open new CALC document
3. Resize OOo Window to 1/3 screen size (top left screen)
4. Open WIN EXPLORER for folder containing 'Testfile.pdf' from testkit
5. Resize EXPLORER Window to 1/3 screen size (bottom right of screen)
6. click 'Testfile.pdf' in EXPLORER Window
7. Drag and drop 'Testfile.pdf' with pressed <cntrl> into spreadsheet
contents area (cells) of CALC document
Result: A "white page with text" as visible with AR in the PDF
document becomes visible in the CALC document

So far, so good, now redo from step 2 with new DRAW document,
Result: Error Message "General input/output error", no drag and drop possible
Insert OLO object from insert menu of the document will work without problems.

Now redo from step 2 with WRITER document,
Result: Some "Insert Area" dialogue will open, if you continue without changes,
Code from PDF document (as visible when you open the PDF document with a text
editor) will be inserted

Now redo from step 2 with PRESENTATION document,
Result: Error Message "General input/output error", no drag and drop possible

Note that when I was under XP, I was able to insert PDF files in Writer
documents but with a special process, see here :

So it seems OOo can do that (being under Linux, I can't check with latest releases).

Under Linux, this is not possible, even launching PDF files embedded in
documents made under Windows ! Should I create a new bug report for this ?

I voted for this issue as it already has mentioned that it it not possible to
drag and drop a PDF into a slide in Impress (under Linux).

AFAIK this is supported and a often used feature in MS PowerPoint.

TM->CGU: Please have a look, seems to be more an enhancement than a defect.
Comment 9 christian.guenther 2007-07-10 12:35:43 UTC
In my mind it's an enhancement.
We should import .pdfs as plugin.
Comment 10 jkonecn 2007-07-10 12:45:24 UTC
Drag and drop used to work so I consider it a defect and a regression.
