In Calc if I open attached "f.xls" some Russian text is not displayed 
correctly (see area circled in red on attached screenshot). Excel 2003 
displays the same text just fine.
Problematic .xls seems to be Excel95 format.

I mistakenly set MIME type wrong for problematic file (attachement 40187). 
File needs to be saved locally and opened from there.

The attached Excel file is broken - it misses a CODEPAGE record that specifies 
the text encoding for the strings in the file. My different German and English 
versions of Excel running on an English Windows XP cannot load this document 
either...
Will think about a workaround to solve this special problem of broken XLS files.
