Description Unknown 2002-08-19 15:15:52 UTC
We had a strange problem to use OO with NFS-mounted home-directories.
The OO crashes with the following messagebox:
-----
The application cannot be started.
The configuration service is not available.
Start the setup application to repair the installation from the CD or the folder
containing the installation packages.
-----

The only solution we found is to mount the nfs directories with nfs-protocol
version 2 (standard in woody is version 3). What could be the reason for that?

Our system is:
Workstation:
- OO installed from the following debian-packages:
  openoffice.org_1.0.1-3_all.deb
  openoffice.org-bin_1.0.1-3_i386.deb
  openoffice.org-spellcheck-de-de_20020505-4_all.deb
  openoffice.org-l10n-en_1.0.1-1_all.deb
  openoffice.org-l10n-de_1.0.1-1_all.deb
- Debian Woody with kernel 2.2.20 (standard from debian)
- mount options for nfs: rsize=8192,wsize=8192,nolock and now nfsvers=2.

Server:
- Debian Woody kernel 2.4.17-686
- NFS-kernel-server (dpkg -s said: nfs-kernel-server 1:1.0-2)

Please contact me if you need more information.

regards,
Matthias

Hi Matthias,

AFAIK the NFS magic number (0x6969) will be the same using NFS version
2 or version 3 on client side.

I'm not aware what's going on in our configuration in detail. But
AFAIK Linux server side NFS version 3 is quite buggy. kernel 2.4.17 is
the first(!!!) patch level for 2.4 kernel that supports NFS version 3.
(F.e. see http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/NFS-HOWTO/intro.html)

As we use NFS version 3 on client side on many Linux machines without
problems I feel the difference is that our servers run Solaris.

Anyhow it could be interesting what's going wrong in OOo's
configuration service.

Regards
Hennes

Just as an additional note: We see the same problem with our
AIX 4.3.3 and AIX 5.1 NFS3 servers (with Linux 2.4.18 and
2.4.19 on the client side). With NFS Version 2 the problem
does not appear.

Jörg

As Hennes mentioned, everything works fine when using NFS2. The within
this report mentioned Kernel 2.4.17 was the first(!!!) patch level for
2.4 kernel that supports NFS version 3. So it should be evaluated if
those problem still occurs with an actual OO (1.0.2 or newer) or not
when using a more recent (final ?) build of a Kernel that supports
NFS version 3.

I've experianced similar behavior using a Novell NFS server supporting v 2 and 3. OO v1.0.2 running on RedHat 8.0.

While trying to view a directory list fron an NFS v3 mount I see nothing. However, if I know the path and file name, I can edit and save files without problems. I can't see them in a "open file" dialog box but I can edit them. If I browse the same path using NFS v2 I get the directory lists.

Interestingly enough, I've also experienced the problem with the Gimp.

As a side note, using the xterm and konqueror, I can get a directory listing from the NFS v3 mount and the NFS v2 mount

Paul.

FYI: OpenOffice 1.0.2 now works for us (Server: AIX5L, Clients:
Linux 2.4.18 and/or 2.4.21-pre4).

Please verify if this problem still occurs with OO beta1/beta2.
Comment 11 thorsten.martens 2003-07-03 10:27:59 UTC
Due to missing further information about those problems with newer
OO-versions, this issue is set to worksforme.
