If you replace a sequence with a shorter one by using CRTL-V, the rest of the
longer sequence appears not to be deleted. It's just a graphical issue, the
content is replaced correctly.
I could provide a screenshot if desired.

Known problem, see issue 49747. As you already pointed out, it is "just" a
graphical issue - workaround it by triggering a screen refresh by Ctrl-Shift-R.
