Description lars 2002-08-22 17:16:14 UTC
dialogue boxes or pop-up windows which require the user to click OK or cancel
before he can continue editing are uncomfortable and often disturbing.

A different technique is to perform the action but to fade in a "window" (a
rectangular shaped area simply, like a tooltip) next to where the action took
place in which the consquences are explained.

this window also contains the undo icon and "don't show this warning for this
type of action again" checkbox.

There may also be placed other options in this window like changing some
behaviour of the performed action like "adjust references to not dynamic" if
the references were pasted dynamic, so that the user has the possibility here
to afterwards achieve what he intended. there should also be an explanation of
how to do it right in the future.

these windows should allow the user to continue working and should
fade back after 5 secs (customizable in OOo preferences). When
clicking somewhere on the window, it vanishes immediately.

reason: when one has to do much work one might know what one does and
so one wants to do it without interruptions; then thoses type of
windows do not disturb and they have vanished after som time anyway.
When wanting to read it, that takes usually max. around 5 sec.s, so
one doesn't have to manually close it. That's also comfortable

ah yes, it should be transparent and a not too uneven rectangle (and
the font size may be smaller than usual (perhaps a preference
option?))

another situation where this is useful:

in Calc: if you insert a new column, each cell in this column
receives the format of its left neighbouring cell, like backgraound
color or a border.

This may be wanted or not. Using the suggested warning technique you
can offer the user to give the new colum teh default format, do
nothing, do this everytime and when it's transparent and only is
active 3 secs, it doesn't hinder the user.

I'm changing components of some issues to ui ui from framework ui; am
I right in doing so? not all: it'd be too much. Also I clarified some
types from Feature to Enhancement

the suggestion in this issue might just be what SmartTags do in Ms Office, so
this issue can be redefined as: implement Microsofts SmartTags

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
