Description russelleast 2002-08-28 23:39:16 UTC
Open the Writer. Type in some text like this:
  This url http://openoffice.org/ works fine.

The url portion will automatically construct a hyperlink out of
"/openoffice.org" and make it a "file:" type url - actually I don't hink it
should, but that's another story.

Ok, select all the text that has a hyperlink, then click either Edit/Hyperlink
or Insert/Hyperlink to get the hyperlink dialog. So far so good, the hyperlink
will be shown and you can change it if you like.

But, how in heck do you remove the hyperlink? I can't see a way to do this. I
tried "blanking-out" the existing hyperlink then clicking Apply, but that
doesn't work, the link remains.
Comment 1 russelleast 2002-08-29 02:03:01 UTC
Never mind, I figured out how to do it (RTFM). But, still-n-all, the
user interface isn't terribly intuitive in terms of what I wanted to
do. I shouldn't have to go to a completely different menu to undo the
affects of adding a hyperlink. It should be possible to both add and
remove a hyperlink in the same dialog. Just my opinion anyway.
Comment 2 prgmgr 2002-08-29 02:39:22 UTC
Russell, thanks for posting your experience.

I've changed your issue to an enhancement request.
Comment 3 prgmgr 2002-08-29 02:40:05 UTC
I've seen this comment crop up before.

Maybe there is a way to make the interface more intuitive.

Comment 5 deragon 2003-02-09 23:05:35 UTC
When right clicking on the mouse, in the menu should appear the
entries "Edit hyperlink" and "Remove hyperlink", but only when the
cursor is within the limits of a hyperlink. There is no point in
showing these options if there is no hyperlink at the cursor.

That solution should be relatively easy to implement, would allow the
removal of a hyperlink while not affecting the format and would be
very intuitive to the user. By selecting "Remove hyperlink", the link
is just gone. One can argue if there should be a dialog to confirm
the intention with the user. I leave the debat to you.

And of course, "Edit hyperlink" whould pop up the hyperlink dialog.

Comment 8 Rainer Bielefeld 2003-10-08 07:19:56 UTC
Made subject more meaningful.

I repeat parts of my comment from issue 9479 why this is a defect:

I agree, removing a hyperlink actually is not a "natural" way.

Additionally, no one will understand why it is impossible to remove a
hyperlink from some text by using the hyperlink dialog, as I tied:

1. mark text with hyperlink
2. click OOo-button "Hyperlink dialogue"
3. delete hyperlink target
4. "Apply" and OK
Expected: Hyperlink will be removed from Text
   Actual: not removed

Same with rightclick "Characters":
11. mark text with hyperlink
12. rightclick, "Characters", card "Hyperlink"
13. delete hyperlink URL
14. "Apply" and OK
Expected: Hyperlink will be removed from Text
    Actual: as expected

It is a DEFECT if it is not possible to delete a hyperlink in the
special hyperlink dialog (see steps 1. to 4.), so --> DEFECT

How to remove a hyperlink is frequently asked question among Danish OOo users.
The reply is often to change format to default (see e.g.
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=10508) , but this also changes
formatting besides the hyperlink.

Since this issue is now the master issue regarding removal of hyperlinks I will
add the following. You can open the hyperlink directly from the context menu,
but I strongly support adding "Remove hyperlink" and "Edit hyperlink" to the
contextmenu also. I find the steps 11-14 (See previous comment) too cumbersome
to be the only way to do it.

Furthermore, you have to mark the hyperlink in order to bring up "open
hyperlink" in the context menu. If you just right click a hyperlink "open
hyperlink" will not appear. (Maybe this is connected to another issue.)

Finally, I encourage the owner to set OS to All and Version to 1.1 and set it to
P3 since part of this issue is actually a defect (See previous post).
Comment 12 isaare 2004-01-08 16:30:18 UTC
Ok it's true, I think not being able to easily remove hyperlinks is a DEFECT for
a web-editor. So I change priority with the hope someone sees it and tells us if
this will be solved, it's very uncomfortable to work with this problem. It's the
only thing that still prevents me to recommend OpenOffice.org to EVERYBODY
including those of my friends who like making web pages... :(
Comment 13 Martin Hollmichel 2004-02-15 07:50:38 UTC
set target to something more meaningful :)

mh->bh: please set appropiate target.
Comment 14 bettina.haberer 2004-03-08 14:03:07 UTC
Hello Andreas, I consider this behaviour as a bug and not enhancement. Thus I
reset this issue to you.
Comment 15 thorsten.ziehm 2004-03-12 10:28:48 UTC
Because of limited resources it is not possible to fix this problem for
OOo1.1.2. We decided to set this task to OOo2.0.
Comment 16 andreas.martens 2004-04-15 12:17:56 UTC
As discussed, it should be more intuitive to remove a hyperlink.

Comment 18 Oliver Specht 2004-04-26 09:30:26 UTC
This will not be implemented for OOo 2.0 -> target changed.
os->cj: I think I need a spec how it should work.
Comment 19 egle 2004-05-02 22:17:47 UTC
It was very good if the ability to remove (convert to simple text) many
hyperlinks (at once) which are spread all over the document appear. The menu
items like "Remove hyperlinks within selected text" or "Convert hyperlinks to
text" should be created in "edit" or right click menu.

This issue still exists as of OOo 1.9.79 (viz. 2.0 Beta).

Steps to reproduce:
 1. Type in a URL, for instance http://google.com/
 2. Hit space or enter.
 3. Highlight the URL.
 4. Open the hyperlink dialogue.
 5. Note lack of "clear" button or the like.

Additionally, the strategy of resetting to default no longer can be easily found
in the documentation. Search for "hyperlink".

(Using Windows XP + 1.9.79)
Comment 22 sajer 2005-05-20 02:27:00 UTC
C'mon guys and girls, this feature must be added soon. It is a major usability
bummer and this issue is 3 years old!!! On oooforum.org and oooforum.dk we get
the question "how do I remove hyperlinks" again and again.

When right clicking a hyperlink an edit option should be available, and from the
edit hyperlink screen a remove hyperlink button would be great.

Since hyperlinks are inserted by autocorrect automatically, this is a major
usability issue.

The person resposible for delaying a fix for this issue should answer all the
!how do I remove the hyperlink" questions at oooforum.org and oooforum.org
without copy/paste of the answer! :)

Pleeeeease, fix fix!
Comment 23 fgaab 2005-07-26 01:46:31 UTC
Another one bytes the dust. Doh! It took me an hour to realize that there is no
way to remove hyperlinks without loosing all other formats (font, size, ...) at
the same time. This really sucks!
Well obviously nobody is in the mood to fix this bug. But I don't want to nag
the OOo team -- they do a very goo job --, instead I will offer my help and
contribute my mite. So please give me a hint: tell me where to change the source
code and I will try to fix it.

A similiar question has been asked on Polish forums recently. To be honest,
sometimes I, too, look instinctively for this option in the context menu,
although I use OpenOffice.org for everything. Two additional entries would be
just fine.
Have a nice day!

Comment 27 scottydm 2006-01-31 12:30:16 UTC
OS implied that a lack of specification for how the remove hyperlink should be
implemented is a major reason why this issue will not be addressed until later.
I've created a couple of mock ups that can be used as a starting point for
discussion. I'm using OO v2.0.1 for Windows, for my examples.

First, a screen shot of the present hyperlink dialog box:
  http://www.skunkwks.com/web/hidden/OOo/hyperlink_dialog_box_current.png

Second, a "photoshopped" screen shot of the same dialog box with my proposal for
a control to remove the hyperlink:
  http://www.skunkwks.com/web/hidden/OOo/hyperlink_dialog_box_proposed.png

Deragon mentioned the right-click context menu--there is no way to get to the
hyperlink dialog box via the context menu. I feel this is an oversight and
suggest the following UI modifications.

A screen shot of the present right-click context menu. Note, this is of a test
document where I entered some URL-like text strings; OO "auto-corrected" some of
these to add hyperlinks to them:
  http://www.skunkwks.com/web/hidden/OOo/rightclick_menu_current.png

My proposal for a new right-click context menu:
  http://www.skunkwks.com/web/hidden/OOo/rightclick_menu_proposed.png

Deragon did not suggest it, but I removed "Open Hyperlink". Every entry on the
context menu modifies the document _except_ "Open Hyperlink", and left-clicking
on the hyperlink opens the hyperlink, a far more preferable user action. As more
is not always better, I suggest removal of the "Open Hyperlink" menu item.

Additionally, there's a facility to modify hyperlinks within the Character
dialog box. A hyperlink is a different beast than any of the other character
modifications. Additionally, a hyperlink does not necessarily change the
appearance of the character string (nor does it need to even contain a character
string as a visual element). In an ideal world, hyperlink editing should _not_
be a part of the Character dialog box.

I hope cj consider the suggestions. Thanks
Comment 29 msandersen 2007-01-07 15:11:13 UTC
This bug is from 2002, it is now 2007 and OOo 2.1 is out. It's a pretty bad
usability bug. I searched Help and didn't find the answer to how to remove the
hyperlink (I searched "URL"). There's mention of the Hyperlink dialog and how to
modify its properties, but not removing it. The current method is extremely
non-intuitive, and I only found it through this thread. I second what has been
said about a simple Remove button and option in the Contextual menu, the first
places you look. When you have a Hyperlink dialog, you naturally assume
everything you need to add AND remove links are there. A simple button can't be
that hard to implement, surely. Nor an option in a Contextual menu. Even with
stretched resources.
Comment 30 russelleast 2007-01-07 15:34:41 UTC
geez, pretty soon we'll need a 5th anniversary party! :-)
Comment 31 scottydm 2007-01-08 08:37:54 UTC
msandersen is right, it's been far too long with no action.

While OO Writer isn't exactly broken, if you don't know the trick it can be very
frustrating to deal with this. This is the kind of junk that can kill a
company's transition from MS Office to Open Office. It only takes a few early
adopters in an office to stumble across this, or something similar, and kill any
enthusiasm for switching.
Comment 32 oukourj 2007-10-26 13:42:20 UTC
I _strongly_ approve the propositions of scottydm from the 31 Jan 07 (all of em:
a 'delete hl" button in hl editing box, a remove and edit hl in context menu,
_as well as_ NO open hyperlink in this same menu).
I think this "bug/defect" is even worse than what some here say: it's not only
bad for web editors, as when you make a carriage return after an e-mail adress
for example, it DOES TRANSFORM the line to an hyperlink... So what? OOo creates
hyperlink when we don't relly want it, and *damn* doesn't even lets us erase
them easily?
That's a huge problem, really, I'm IT operator, I know somewhat about computers,
have a good feeling about using them and all, but when I go in the hyperlink
editing tab, _delete_ the hyperlink line and confirm, I just expect the
hyperlink to ***** disapear. Won't you?

I must also say I love OOo, and am very grateful to you guys who do that work,
but this bug is bad. Really. That must be said :)

Would it make sense to have a "Remove formatting..." option, that would open a
window listing the types of formatting that have been applied, and offers
something like

Formating
[X] Hyperlink
[ ] Bold

[&Cancel] [Remove &All] [Remove &Selected]

In this way it would be more general, and help apply to other formatting cases.

Hi Simos,

>Would it make sense to have a "Remove formatting..." option, that would open a
>window listing the types of formatting that have been applied, and offers
>something like
...
>In this way it would be more general, and help apply to other formatting cases.

per se a good idea to generalize the issue but
1) from a usability point of view, I would not look in "remove formatting" if I
wanted to remove a hyperlink. I do not perceive hyperlinks as specially
formatted text but as text which I can click to get somewhere else. Maybe one
could name it "Remove formatting and links"...
2) how do I edit the link target if I only have the option to remove the link?

--> I agree with deragon, when right-clicking on the link I expected two
(additional) options, Edit Hyperlink and Remove Hyperlink
Comment 39 davidclayton 2008-10-07 10:13:36 UTC
I can confirm that this is still an issue in V3 300m8.

"when right-clicking on the link [or more importantly selecting a part of a
link)such as a '.' at the end] I expected two (additional) options, Edit
Hyperlink and Remove Hyperlink" [remove is more important here as edit can be
done from the tool bar]

It would be good to have this raised and resolved - its a key feature we are
missing.
Comment 40 Mathias_Bauer 2008-11-05 15:00:01 UTC
In 3.1 we will have "remove hyperlink" in the context menu of hyperlinks. I will
check if we can also implement a simple control in the hyperlink dialog, e.g. as
specified by scottydm.

Oliver, what do you think: can we also do something like this here:

http://www.skunkwks.com/web/hidden/OOo/hyperlink_dialog_box_proposed.png
Comment 41 Oliver Specht 2008-11-07 14:38:45 UTC

sw/source/ui/inc/swmn_tmpl.hrc
sw/source/ui/shells/textsh1.cxx
officecfg/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/UI/WriterCommands.xcu

I'm going to open issue 9479 about adding a remove hyperlink function to the
hyperlink dialog.
Comment 42 davidclayton 2008-11-07 14:50:29 UTC
There are two points here:

1) remove hyperlink in the hyperlink dialog (for editing the link).

and

2) the option to 'remove a hyperlink' from the right click menu, once a link has
been selected.

I feel that this is still an issue, but is a nice to have, not a show stopper.
Therefore I would like to suggest that the issue is re-opened, but perhaps two
separate issues need to be created.
Comment 43 Mathias_Bauer 2008-11-07 15:58:06 UTC
We have the best solution (context menu) done and want to get it integrated. We
don't want to wait until we might have fixed the hyperlink dialog. I adjusted
the summary to reflect that.

IMHO the context menu should be enough, the dialog enhancement indeed would be
only "nice to have". So if someone thinks that we need this, please create a new
issue.

1)
Not a defect but a feature. Changed Type accordingly.
And a feature introducing UI changes ("Edit Hyperlink", "Remove Hyperlink" in
the context menu).

So, expecting a spec...

2) "Tools - Customize - Keyboard/Toolbars - Category: Edit" has now 2 times
"Hyperlink".
One is "(Edit )Hyperlink", the other "(Remove )Hyperlink".
-> the 2nd one should be called "Remove Hyperlink" though the customize list
only shows a terminology with "Delete <object>" (could have been UX prooved...)

3) When selecting a string "www.anysitehere.com" NOT formatted as hyperlink, the
context menu shows "Remove Hyperlink" anyway. -> Bug

@OS/MBA:
Now what do we do? Proposals:
a) strict way: CWS back to NEW until Spec is there and everything is fixed
b) cool way: @OS: make a Spec ASAP and you'll fix 2) and 3) in an upcoming CWS.

I advocate for b) 'cos I'm a cool team player ;)
