Description mnivet 2002-09-06 14:29:29 UTC
First, a lot of thanks to those involved in this important adventure.

In my french Buidings company (catégorie BTP), we have decided to move from MS
to OpenOffice (more than 200 PC).
This is ma first issue.

Trying to print a few hundreds of addresses labels turns to be a nightmare,
wheteher with OO 1,0,0 or OO 1,0,1 . We have tried different machines (P3, 256
Mo RAM) under w98 or nt4w.
We have just spent 1,5 days to print 1300 adresses labels with OO 1,0.
The format was 24 labels per page : see the 2 attached pieces (etiquette2.sxw
and adresseetiquette2.sxc) SORRY BUT I CANT SEE HOW ATTACH THEM !
More than 10 minutes were needed 2 pages and the PC hanged every 45 minutes. It
seems to be a real problem for the program to sort out 24 records on the same
page.

On the other end, we have experimented successfully mailing letters with only
one adress par letter and this works fine.

Many messages complaint about publishing labels.
Comment 3 Rainer Bielefeld 2003-07-10 07:23:11 UTC
Hi reporter,

thank you for using and supporting OOo.

Does this problem still exist in OOo 1.0.3?

If yes, pls. let me know, might be I can give you some hints to solve
your problem. I tried with a new label-document (based on your
attachment) and your database: It took 27 seconds (on my PC PIII
667MHz 128MB) to print all adresses into a PDF without any problem
(OOo1.0.3.1 german version WIN98SE).

If I will not see any further action as votes, attachments or
confirmations in this issue, I will have to close this issue
2003-08-31 as WFM.

Hello,

I have already voted for this but here is an additional comment. In my
case, there is an address database with ~700 entries. When address
labels are printed, it takes forever. After a few hours I stopped the
Openoffice process. This was on 1.0.2, but according to release notes,
the address label printing feature has not been touched in 1.0.3. So I
am currently printing the address labels with MS Works :-(

Rainer, if this works in your case, it might be that I don't use the
label feature correctly. However, I followed the mailing label
instructions --- which I can't find any more. Could you e-mail me
step-by-step instructions, how you managed to get the label printing
working? Please start your instructions from the very beginning i.e.
computer has a clean installation of ooo with nothing else.

Thanks,

   - Kalle

I will test and solve this step by step with you, but please be a
little patient, I am totally overloaded with work for the next 2-4
days :-(

Hi,

here as promised my instructions for "quickprint" with the attached
file ;-)

00. download test files dated 2002-09-06
After that we will have to do some preparations concerning
    database.
0. open etiquette2.sxw without update of links
1. delete contents of fist field completely
2. Menu: tools-DataSources
3. new
4. Enter Name "fichiers"
5. select Type "spreadsheet"
6. Select Database-URL on your harddisk of "fichieradresse2.sxc"
7. go to card "spreadsheet"
9. go to card "Tables"
10. Select "All Tables" and "Feuille1"
11. click OK
12. Back to "Etiquette2.sxw", first field
13. Menu: Insert-Fields-others-card"Database"
14. Select Type "Mail merge fields"
15. Select "fichiers"
16. Unfold "fichiers", so that you see all field names
17. Drag and Drop all fields to the first input field of the label-
document as you see it in the third field
18. Insert Blanks and <RETURN> as required, so that your input field
looks as field 2, and put cursor behind
    <VILLE>
19. Mark "Next Record" in "Type"-Pane
20. click "Insert"
21. Close "fields" - window
22. Click "Synchronize Labels"
24. Save file
25. Print (I used ADOBE GENERIC POSTSCRIPT PRINTER to create
    attached PDF)
26. You see how addresses from database are inserted, different
Addresses in each field of the page.
On my PC complete printout takes less than 30s.
    See result in attached "result.pdf

I made that test with RC1, but I had the same result with 1.0.3.1 and
1.1Beta2.

I hope my hints are helpful.

If I here no further problems, I shall close this issue 2003-August-31

Shit, it seems I selected wrong mime type, might be you have to rename
"result.pdf.png" to "result.pdf.png" before you can open it.

Comment 9 Rainer Bielefeld 2003-07-22 18:19:20 UTC
Hm,
something is wrong with my result.pdf: all odd addresses are missing :-(

But that is no serious problem - might be I added "Next Record" 2 Times?

I made a second test with printout to pdf and to my printer (HO
Deskjet 895Cxi), both successful with all records and printout time
more or less 1 minute.

Hi,
thanks for instructions. I followed them as well as possible, with
couple of exceptions:
14. Select Type "Mail merge fields"
--> there is no type "Mail merge fields", so I selected "Form letter
fields".
25. Print
--> When I selected Print, result contained just field names. So I
selected "Form letter" to print labels.

After a minute waiting, labels were created to display and then the
printing started. After 30 minutes waiting, only the first 5 pages
were ready so I killed OpenOffice from task manager. The printer
driver was Adobe Acrobat PDF writer.

As told before, my OpenOffice version is 1.0.1. The computer is PII
with Windows 2000 and 256MB of RAM.

Hi Kalle,
Michel told me, that this issue was WFM for him when he followed the
Instruction. Now let us find what causes the problem on your system,
but please understand that I can not spend to much energy for testing
on builds older than 1.0.3.

It is quite normal that "print" can not work, only "print form letter"
is correct.

Could you please create on your system a folder
"C:\test"
with michels database "fichiers" and your mail merge labels print
document in it
print only for (app.) 20 marked addresses (if possible with generic
adobe ps printer) to that folder (Postscript or PDF-Result is required)
ZIP and attach the complete folder with all 3 files (database,
letter, printout result) here in the issue?

I still have some questions, because I do not have 1.0.1:
101. can you change to 1.0.3 ?
102. Is "form letter fields" in 1.0.1 the correct selection of 1.0.1
for my step 14 (I can not check that, I have no english 1.0
     version
103. can you please tell us some more investigations concerning what
you saw an your screen during printout (xxx of yyy pages, screenshot)?
