Description nedrichards 2002-09-16 15:08:44 UTC
There's a lack of UI consistancy within the installation program. Currently to
install a multi user setup on most OS's you need to mix your metaphors. A CLI
switch needs to be passed before you're suddenly thrust into a GUI client.

Ideally you should have two options: all CLI or all GUI. This mix in metaphors
is confusing to end users and doesn't do our OEM's a favour either.

(this bug report is based on several conversations with different Desktop Linux
'white box' OEMs in the UK).
Comment 1 Olaf Felka 2002-09-17 11:58:32 UTC
What do you mean with CLI? What's mixed up?
Comment 2 nedrichards 2002-09-17 12:25:35 UTC
Sorry, by CLI I mean command line. You currently have to type in
./setup -net or somesuch and then it throws you into the GUI, yes? I'm
saying that you should be able to just type in ./setup (or run it in
your GUI like KDE, NOME or whatever on *nix or WinXP etc.) and then
have as the first screen an option over which install to choose.

I'm also saying that there should be an easier way to create response
files (that's how you script the installer isn't it?)
Comment 3 nedrichards 2002-09-20 11:05:57 UTC
It looks like this has been partially solved with the new -nogui
option in SRX643b, available when you use a response file (p.s. we
*really* need updated response file docs)

The only problem now left is that you often have to drop into the
command line to start the installer. This should not be necessary. I'm
not sure how difficult it would be to offer a simple 'what type setup
do you want - single user, Multiuser etc.' screen as the first thing
you see in the installer. But it should be done.

Hi reporter,

does this problem still exist in OOo 1.0.3?

If yes, please tell us!.

If I will not see any further action as votes, attachments or
confirmations in this issue, I will have to close this issue
2003-08-31 as WFM.

This is still same in 1.1 Rc4. user have problem with multiuser
installation by using the command line. If we read the user mailing
list we know that many people facing this problem.
dont forget user are not so familiar anymore with command line.
especially user who use computer at 95 or up. maybe if they use
computer at 1990 they still ok with the command line

I hope we can get this on 1.1.1

Hi Rainer, dont go from this. (I add you again)

Better we can support together.

The only things in here I want to say is the way to make muliuser
isntallation example in NT, XP, and 200 as easy as possible for
ordinary user.
if you still feel it is difficult, maybe other user also will feel the
same. so lets follow up
Comment 8 Olaf Felka 2003-09-17 09:05:04 UTC
We shurely won't have this in 1.1.1. A new feature is planned for OOo
2.0: native installers like rpms, packages and MSI. It's intended that
there only will be a '-net' installation.
BTW:
What is Nick supposed to do with this enhancement?
Comment 9 utomo99 2003-09-19 07:04:13 UTC
we maybe will not get best solutions for 1.1.1, but we hope can find a
way to reduce user problem when need to install in multiuser situation.

There maybe some possibilities:
- add batch file to do this, so user who want to install it can use
this, instead of typing it manually which for normal user sometimes
not so easy. for programmer and techical people maybe is very easy.
- other possibilities, add checkbox, mostly for windows user so can
choose this, and will be able to multiuser install without difficult.

I know 1st option maybe easier . but 2nd is better.
the best is 2.0 but for a moment we need to make user experience
better and easier.

Hello, first of all I really think the Summary of this bug should be
changed, it is too vague. It should include at least "multi user"
and "installation".

I also agree that multi user installation in windows should be
easier. IMO this is so serious that I would hesitate between
reporting it as an "enhancement" or "defect" - I'd say it is only
fair to expect OO to be accessible to all users after running setup.

I just noticed the reference to "./setup -net", well if that works,
then it is easier than I thought, still like the original reporter
said, many people don't use the console anymore, why not just
install for all users by default? Or at least put a checkbox in the
installation program.

By the way, you should check the discussion going on here:
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=606
Someone posted really complicated instructions on how to install OO
for multi users. So even if you can do it by simply running "./setup
-net" the fact that it is not intuitive leads to situations like
this, where noone knows how to do it, and people end up waisting
lots of time with it.

I'm a linux user myself, but this is what's keeping me from
recommending OO to many people, including some teachers, because I
know that eventualy many users will face this problem, and give up
OO.

Ok, now that I'm finished with that I'd like to thank you all the
work you've been putting in OO. It is really amazing, and there is
no MS office here at home anymore! Keep up the good work!

Hello Nick, this enhancement will be covered by PCD 20373 for OO.o
2.0. Please have a look into that concept. This one will be closed as
duplicate.
