Description shinobu_maehara 2007-07-21 22:40:49 UTC
OpenOffice.org wrongly assumes that paper is left-aligned in the paper tray.
This causes problems for users who use a printer that requires paper to be
centered in the paper-tray (like, in my case, the HP LaserJet 1010).

Currently I'm using a kludgy work-around (setting the paper width for
documents I receive to 21 cm and adjusting the margins accordingly), but this
is bound to cause problems for others, as well as being a bother.

What kind of paper?
Please give an step by step description to evaluate or provide a sample.

White paper, red paper, blue paper, light cardboard, A5, envelopes, ...
How to reproduce: print a document with a paper size that isn't 21 cm wide.
In other words, don't assume that bugsubmitters are morons. Also, don't assume
people don't read the rules. You realize that's terribly presumptious and does
a terrific job at pissing people off?
"OpenOffice.org wrongly assumes that paper is left-aligned in the paper tray."
I have extensively tested this with all kinds of paper sizes and printer
settings - I could enumerate them, but what's the point? It happens always. So
I'll restate: OpenOffice.org for some reason, unknown to me, always assumes,
regardless of actual paper size (which the software cannot detect, so what's
the point of asking?) or printer settings, or document page size settings,
assumes the paper is left-aligned in the printer tray. The only variable I
couldn't control was the printer, and if you look closely, you'll see that I
did in fact mention it in the description: "HP LaserJet 1010". If you look
very closely you may even deduce the width of the paper tray but I'll leave
that as an exercise for the reader.

I am sorry, but with this kind of "statement" you are not very helpful to
reproduce and solve issues.
This is not a forum to discuss personal feelings, it is an issue tracker.
You can assume that your issue will not be handled favored than the issues from
users who "hold the rules".
Now, PLEASE give a STEP_BY_STEP description and/or provide a sample to help us
evaluate.
Thank you for your comprehension.

I *did* hold the rules and I *did* give a step-by-step instruction, insofar as
that's possible considering that for normal people there's only one step. I've
described the circumstances that cause the problem in detail, only the be
asked for irrelevancies. If my previous post and perhaps this one appear a tad
emotional, it's because you are leaving the impression that you can't read
plain English.
I'll repeat, as explicitly as I can possibly be:
*Create a new document, or open an existing one. It doesn't matter where you
got it, or who wrote it, or what's in it, whether it contains only text or
only graphics, or both, if you use a fresh install or an existing one, or
whether my computer or someone elses was used to create it.
*Change the page width to something else than 21 cm. It doesn't matter how you
do this. It doesn't matter if you select a built-in papersize or specify a
custom one.
*Print the document to a LaserJet 1010. It doesn't matter if print directly,
or ask the spooler to print to file and let it print it later.
*Notice that the page comes out printed as if the software assumed the page
was left-aligned in the tray. On the LaserJet 1010 pages are centered in the
tray; the text and/or graphics appear shifted. This only happens using OOo.
What more can you possibly want?
Oh, about the "I'm sorry": spare the false politeness. It's quite obvious by
your tone that you're not sorry at all. And to set one final thing straight:
this is not about my feelings. I'm just trying to second-guess what this
hidden bit of information is, that you are looking for... you obviously know
what it is, and that it won't actually help fixing the problem, but you won't
do anything until I guess it, like some kind of "password"...

SBA->HI: This issue is unconfirmed yet. As we do not have this printer, please
wait for a confirmation based on OOo 2.3 or a comment from PL.
Put PL and myself on cc (I don't want to miss anything in this one...)

checked with 2.3.0, WinXP
Printer 1: HP Deskjet 990c, left-aligned paper tray
Printer 2: Okipage 6ex, centered paper tray

1. check: Tried printing a document, paper format A5 - on both printers the
alignment is ok (HP Deskjet left-aligned, Okipage centered)

2. check: printing a document, user defined paper format 10 cm x 21 cm - on both
printers the output is left-centered, even on the printer Okipage (not ok)

-> confirmed for documents with user defined paper format on printer with
centered paper tray

@shinobu_maehara: To ensure that the cause is not the printer driver, please
check with any other office-programme which supports user defined paper format.

SBA->jrahemipour: Thank YOU for this step-by-step description and confirmation.

For you it only happens with custom sizes? That's odd. I noticed it for the
first time with one of the built-in envelope sizes and have since reproduced
it for most of the sizes smaller than A4 (i.e. those that will actually fit in
my printer), including custom size at various widths.
As I said before, it only appeared to happen in OOo. Microsoft Word (the
closest I have to Writer) prints all papersizes just fine. Most programs don't
support as wide a range of papersizes as Word or Writer, but those that they
support print fine.
To rule out a corrupt or buggy driver I have just tried it with the driver for
a similar HP printer: the LaserJet 1100, which also expects its paper to be
centered in the tray, if I'm not mistaken. Same effect, it prints just the
same as with the correct driver, both in Word and in Writer.

I tried to reproduce the behaviour again, this time OS Linux, printer HP
Laserjet 2500n, centered paper tray, two different printer drivers:

Printing a document with paper format A5: ok
Printing a document with paper format User 10 x 14: not ok

It happened once or twice, that the output was ok, although I set a user defined
paper format.
