Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 8099
Chart title from a cell
Last modified: 2013-09-25 20:41:56 UTC
It would be great if you could have the chart title as a reference to a cell so you should only change the cell to change the title of a chart. The reference could automatic be the cell between the x axis titles and the y axis title: A1: Chart title B1: X axis title 1 C1: X axis title 2 A2: Y axis tilte 1 B2: Value C2: Value A3: Y axis title 2 B3: Value C3: Value

FYI: It's already on the chart wish list, see http://graphics.openoffice.org/chart/featurewishes.html

Very good idea referring cell content (text) to the title as a part of the chart. Hello Björn, please give approval for this evaluated OO.o 2.0 flagged issue. If you confirm with the target OO.o 2.0, then please keep it on your owner (or the owner of the concerning developer) for implementation. In case you want this issue for 'OOo Later', then please reset the target milestone. If you decline the issue finally, please set the resolution to 'Wontfix' (but do not close). In case of 'OOo Later' or 'Wontfix' please reset it on Bettina's owner. Thank you.
The automatic detection of a cell that contains titles is a bit difficult. The only intuitive thing would be to use the "upper left empty cell" for the main title. Title Cat1 Cat2 ... Ser1 1 3 ... Ser2 3 2 ... ... However, it would be useful to offer a tab-page in the title dialog (for any of the titles), where you can choose the cell from where the content of the title comes from. ->Bettina: I suggest to postpone this feature to "OOo Later"
I would be happy just to be able to set the title, subtitle to the value of a cell. Figure out the smart selection of that cell at a later date. To me, the shortcoming is that these features of the chart are strings and not fully functional text objects. I suggest that the charts team aim to make all the chart annotations (including data labels, axis descriptions) text objects. We could then include data from the spreadsheet cells, or anywhere else, using textfields (com.sun.star.text.TextField...). At the user interface level, I suggest that actually having to specify the cell by name is a particular difficulty. I have been doing that for years in MSExcel. If issue 22788 was resolved we could simply replace the title with a textbox containing data linked to the cell or whatever.
my comment should read ....NOT a particular difficulty ....
Reassigned to Björn.
I would like to add to this discussion the following: include the axis (x or y) Maximum, Minimum, Major Interval, Minor Interval and "Axis at" to be referenced to cells as well. I have wished that Excel has had this option for a long time now. It seems that if other numerical values can be referenced, why can't the axis max/min/scale. Shanx
