Description vodowd 2007-10-05 16:21:24 UTC
I created several Word 97 format documents using the Open Office Writer on a
Windows 98 OS. I noticed if I perform a search in Windows for text I know is
contained in the .doc the item(s) is not found; opening the document confirms
the string is within it. If the document is save using Microsoft Office (no
other changes performed), I am able to successfully search on text in the
file.

This does not happen with .xls files.

I can provide copies of files, but I have not seen a place on this page for
attachments.

This issue becomes critical to me as I am unemployed and using your application
to create resumes and cover letters. But if the items can not be searched on,
hiring firms will not find my information on their websites.

Which "items"/search string are talking about?
Please give an example.

Searching for "Analyst" retrieves both documents.

Problem is, that OO Writer stores all characters in MS Word files as a Unicode
character (two bytes). Thus, grepping through these files, an expression cannot
be found at all.

MRU->HBRINKM: is it really necessary to store everything in Unicode symbols?

I am not able to replicate this result. Seaching for the "Vincent" returns
both files but "Analyst", "Business Analyst", or "CRM" only return the Windows
version.
