Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 85517
Word import breaks chapter numbering, putd hard number on certain paragraph
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:17:31 UTC
When importing a Word file, the chapter numbering is corrupted when compared to the original file. Will try to attach example word file...
Created attachment 51109 [details] Zip file containing original Word .doc file and resulting OpenOffice .odt file
In the example test.doc, the chapters following "6. Badminton" should be "6.1 6.1 Lastenheft Badminton -Ist", but it is numbered "4.4 Lastenheft Badminton -Ist".
I can confirm, that it shows different in version SRC680m241 than in Word2007. The problem is, that the outline is not clean in Word. Chapter 5 hasn't got a "numbering" in Word and its style is different from the others. The 6 for the chapter 6 is set hard in the numbering in Word. You can see how broken the numbering is already in Word, if you insert two new chapters before chapter 5 in Word.
As an aside, this problem nearly caused me some humiliation because I was about to complain about the seemingly broken numbering in a client's document, before I remembered having seen this kind of problem before with imported Word documents... In this case, I didn't even want to edit the document, but only read it. So even if chapter 5 will cause problems in Word, what's really nasty is that the numbering of chapter 6 is different from what Word displays here. I wonder why Word seems to continue numbering from the "hard set" number given to chapter 6, while OpenOffice continues with a different number? Is there any way the importer in OpenOffice could cause the same behaviour? I'd assume this is a considerable problem for interoperability with Word, given that even I know a number of people who experienced the same problem.
The numbering has been interrupted after Chapter 4 and its subpoints. The numbers for 5 have been entered manually (no auto-numbering). MRU->OD: The second level of of chapter 6 is continued from the last subpoint of Chapter 4 as it looks. Maybe, because a hard numbering has been imported on paragraph "6 Badminton" when imported into Writer. clicking on "Numbering off" will give back the Outline style...
Very tricky Microsoft Word document. OD->MRU: Do you know how heading "6. Badminton" got its number - namely "6" - in Microsoft Word? I did not find the corresponding dialog/option in Microsoft Word, which tells the heading, that it should continue its numbering with "6".
I also do not know, how this number got formatted. The only thing I found out is, that this paragraph does not belong to the Outline used in the rest of the text. Also, when you look into the properties of the numbering of "6. Badminton" in MS Word, it says "Start with 5" ?!?!?!? VERY CURIOUS...
deeper investigation reveals that the "list style override" feature is used for paragraph "6. Badminton". Thus, this paragraph still belongs to the list contain the headings, but it applies another list style, whose start value is overridden with value 6. Full support for such a feature in Writer is planned for OOo 3.0. For the given special case that only the start value of the list style is overridden a special handling in the WW8 import filter could be possible without the planned feature for OOo 3.0
