First of 2 similar but different issues; hoping to get both in today, not sure.

OS: XP Pro SP2+
Attached Files: junk1.doc, original Word 2002/SP3 file
junk1.odt .doc as opened with Writer
junk2.doc: .doc copy of all but last para mark to blank .odt file (small - pics
are placeholdres but similar problemr).

The Word file is stable; it can be opened and closed, reopened with no problems
as long as no editing is done. To desensitize the file, I did a text replace
of all letters (but not font, puncutation, etcl) with the letter "A". Then I
touched up image positions due to the text width differences, and saved it.
That's attachment 1 [details].

For attachment 2 [details] I opened the desensitized .doc and opened it with soffice. I
noted the misaligned images, saved the file, opened it again to see the the
misalignment remained, closed it again, and that is attachment 2 [details].

Then I opened the .doc file and copied all but the last paragraph mark in the
file (a popular way to "fix" many things) and pasted it into soffice's blank
Text Document. That file is small, with picture place-holders. That is
attachment 3 [details].

This only seems to occur on files with a size of about 9 Meg and greater. The
larger the file, the worse the image damage becomes. The submitted file -could-
be repaired manually, but it would be a pretty fair amount of work.

I will happily respond to any requests for further information and if wanted
can easily provide screen shots.

I don't see any way to attach files on this page so I'm assuming it will come
up on the next page? Hope so.

Best REgards,

Twayne

New development: This evening just for grins I downloaded and installed Sun's
ODF Add-In to allow MS Office to Import/Export ODF files (OOo files).
The amount of image mislocation in OOo was markedly LESS using the Export
odf from Word on my 33 Meg test file.
It would still be a pretty fair annoyance to repair, but ... it would be
possible to manually repair that document. There was only one place, around
page 25 or so, where the image movement put several tabled images one on top fo
the other haphazardly.
There were still other instances of images, particularly those at the bottom
of the pages, to be moved down, outisde the confines of its page but that may
be a result of the initial haphazardness I just mentioned.

That's the good news because that would cover nearly ALL of the Word files I
have with a few notable exceptions.
The bad news is, with the 53 Meg file, the image trashing was still
substantial enough to be extremely annoying to repair manually.
To synopsize though, it at least appears that the Sun Add-in allows files
quite a bit larger than 10 Meg to be successfully transferred to OOo format. I
have a LOT Of those. But, for the few in the 50 Meg and up range, I would be
willing to further breatk those up into smaller files if it were my only
choice. Going forward I would just never again allow a file to get larger than
10 Meg. It's a workable work-around if nothing else.

2nd of the "two related issues" still not posted; awaiting resolution of mru
contact details.

MRU: I have uploaded Junk1.doc and Junk1.odt. I believe now all three
attachments I mentioned in my Desc1 have now been provided. Twayne

Me and OD now had a closer look at the problem - it is an already known one.
Open the document in OOo. Just click the large graphic of the bridge (on page
51) and open the graphics properties. On the first tab page click "follow text
flow" option and OK. Now it will look es expected.
This problem is already tracked as issue 84783.
